Ingredients in place for central US tornado outbreak
Source: The Weather Channel

An outbreak of severe storms is expected tomorrow and tomorrow night in the Plains and parts of the Mid-Mississippi Valley. Damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes (including some strong ones) are all possible.

The system that will produce the severe weather will begin to come together tonight and tomorrow in the Plains...

Tomorrow, showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop ahead of the approaching cold front across the Plains. Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop in parts of central Kansas and north central Oklahoma by the afternoon hours.

After dark, severe storms will become more widespread over eastern Kansas, the northeastern third of Oklahoma, and parts of western and northern Missouri. Some severe storms are also possible into western Illinois, southern Iowa, southern Nebraska, western Arkansas, and northeastern Texas.

3. Actually, that kind of weather is not really unexpected in those areas.
It's sometimes hard to predict, but they are really getting much better with that. Property damage can be quite horrific, but the new warning systems and availability of advanced weather data has certainly saved a lot of lives.

8. Not unexpected but it has gotten worse over the last decade or so
We seem to have more tornados than we used to. I can remember many springs with no tornados. Now it's unusual to not have tornados.

12. when I brought my second son home from the hospital...Tornado hit Abilene
My ex and my sister thought it was "cool"-I hid in the bathtub with a mattress over me and my boys...until the tornado blew our back door off...then I was joined by the other brave souls.Once,we were hit at the grocery store...we all migrated to the ice cream and beer aisles-said we were going to die happy :)(we didn't-our windows were busted by softball sized hail, though.)

6. How do you spot a Midwesterner?
We are the ones looking for the basement when the local sirens blow--EVEN when we travel.

I used to market kid's books in a midwest territory that included Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and a small part of Iowa. One woman I talked to laughed about being at a PTA convention in DC and the storm sirens went off while they were there. She said you could easily spot the folks from Tornado Alley because they were the ones looking for a basement. Everyone else was just standing around scratching their head at that unaccustomed siren going off.

11. Last week, I was watching my cousin's daughter, forecast for unsettled weather
I had just gotten her down for an after lunch nap and settled in to get some actual work done. Storm siren went off half a block away and it was a couple seconds before I realized 1PM, first Wednesday of the month. Still checked the skies in all directions before deciding that heading to the basement was not in order.

I hope everyone stays safe. That means we'll get really strong sustained outflow winds. Crap.
