EPA Approves First-Ever Plan to Pump Chemical Deep Underwater Near Leak Site

(CBS/AP) A BP official is telling The Associated Press that the company has received federal approval to continuously spray chemicals underwater on the massive oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico.

BP PLC spokesman Mark Proegler said the company received Environmental Protection Agency approval and began pumping dispersant on the site starting at 4:30 a.m. Monday. The company plans to continue spraying and taking tests.

The dispersants had never been tried at such depths before this spill and officials have been worried about the effect on the environment.

14. they are so ridiculously unqualified to be out there drilling into the earth

water and oil, a mile under the ocean, and they don't have a back up plan. This is one of those all or nothing scenarios and you are right, they said 'nothing' sounds find to us.

pitiful

5. They don't want to kill us all
They wouldn't have any customers... Now if they want to make us sick, that's another story. They'd be helping out their buddies in big pharma..and other beneficiaries of the health insurance bail out bill.

13. Maybe they're trying to bring about Armageddon.
I don't know, but looking at the actions of BP, they're certainly reckless, aren't they?

4. This company says it's willing to turn over all production to oil eating bacteria...

But executives at Osprey Biotechnics are still trying to find the right governmental people to consider their plan for abating the damage.

“We are prepared to divert all our production to this specific culture,” said Lauren Danielson, executive vice president, after a day of back-to-back meetings with the production staff and key corporate clients.

Osprey's bacteria, brand-named Munox, can be mixed with a dispersant and are viable in salt water, executives told the Herald Tribune.

“They would apply our bacteria directly on the water,” said company president Vincent Scuilla. “The bacteria attaches to the oil, which is its food, and the things start colonizing.”

“And now these hungry bacteria are literally consuming the oil, digesting it, and breaking it down to harmless end products like CO2 and water.”

They admit that it won't solve the problem but it could help.

8. Letting loose a bacteria that feasts on oil in the Gulf is like lighting a match down there.
They'll be battling that bacteria forever if it gets into the oil tankers or pipeline or refineries.

15. They can use Monsanto's "Terminator" bacteria
It will die off fast enough to make you need to buy more and restock during the ongoing disaster.

9. Somebody should be shot for this. They do that for a lot less in China.
The gulf is fucked for the rest of my life. And we'd be lucky if the damage stays in the Gulf.
