Nearly 100 killed, 340 injured in Iraq attacks

Nearly 100 people were killed and around 340 injured in a series of bombings and armed attacks across Iraq on Monday that the government described as an attempt to destabilize the country.

The police, army and witnesses confirmed attacks in various parts of the country, in the deadliest wave of violence in Iraq so far this year. Most of the dead were civilians.

The worst attacks occurred in the city of Hilla, some 100 kilometres south of the capital Baghdad, medics and witnesses said.

Terrorists first set off two car bombs outside a textile factory, then, as doctors arrived at the scene to help the wounded, a suicide bomber blew himself up. Local media reported that 55 people were killed and 22 injured in the attacks.

"The car bombs targeted the buses carrying the workers home as they left the factory," said Faleh al-Amri, who witnessed the attacks.

Iraq hit by wave of deadly attacks

Source: Al Jazeera English

At least 74 people have been killed and 269 injured in a series of attacks that rocked Iraq.

More than dozen of the attacks on Monday occurred in the capital Baghdad alone, executed within hours, with assailants using silenced and automatic weapons, roadside bombs and cars rigged with explosives.

The latest bomb killed seven and injured 18 in Basra, Iraq's second largest city and the country's southern oil hub. In another separate attack in Basra, two people were killed.

Security forces were the apparent target of much of the assault, with patrols and checkpoints manned by local and federal police, as well as the Iraqi national army, all being hit.

In another incident, however, two cars parked outside a textile plant in the city of Hillah and laden with explosives blew up as workers were exiting the building, killing at least 36 people and wounding more than 140 others.

1. McClatchy: Nearly 100 dead in Iraq's most lethal day of the year
Nearly 100 dead in Iraq's most lethal day of the year
By Sahar Issa, McClatchy Newspapers 1 hr 3 mins ago

BAGHDAD — Nearly 100 people died and at least 300 others were injured Monday in a series of attacks that crisscrossed Iraq , targeting security forces, factory workers and shoppers on what authorities called the deadliest day of the year.

The violence - a combination of explosions and drive-by shootings at checkpoints - occurred against a backdrop of political stagnation since the March parliamentary elections, which pitted Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki against secular rival Ayad Allawi in a race so close that the outcome is still disputed.

<snip>

"The parliament is in limbo, so who is there to call the government to account and demand to know why security is slipping?" Tania Talaat , a Kurdish lawmaker, told the Sharqiya satellite TV channel Monday. "It's because there's no one to monitor their performance. The security forces should not be affected by the political atmosphere and the tensions between the political rivals."

5. Does anyone believe this will stop when we are finally out of there?
Nothing short of ethnic cleansing from one side or the other will end this.

6. I have a plan to prevent genocide in Iraq

We grant US citizenship to all Sunnis in Iraq and provide them with free passage to Wyoming. Then we pull out of Iraq leaving mostly Shiites. This will help prevent genocide in Iraq while increasing diversity in Wyoming.
