WASHINGTON – Sen. Robert Menendez is urging the Major League Baseball Players Association to boycott next year's All Star Game in Phoenix over the recently passed Arizona law to crack down on illegal immigrants.

The New Jersey Democrat says in a letter that 27 percent of Major League players are Latinos and they shouldn't be subjected to a law Menendez says codifies racial profiling.

10. Why does the law codify racial profiling?
Illegal immigrants are not really a race, are they?

11. It allows law enforcement to profile for undocumented workers.
This means that anyone who is of even vaguely Latino descent can be required to carry proof of residence with them at all times. This includes American citizens because you can't tell the difference between American citizens and non-American citizens by physical appearance, but the law allows them to legally try.

13. So? Let them carry their driver's license, no?
I'm from Venezuela, we're required to carry an ID (cedula) at all times. What's the big problem? This way they can identify the illegal aliens and send them to jail, right?

22. I have trouble with this as well......
My fiance is from Argentina, here on a visa doing research, and is required to carry her "papers" at all times. When she goes back to Argentina, she often needs to visit the U.S. embassy to update the visa. If something is wrong with her paperwork, she may need to stay in Argentina. If she were to lose her job here, she has to immediately return home....very short notice.

After seeing what LEGAL immigrants need to go through to do things the right way, I have a problem with a person that does it illegally, steals someones identity, and then complains about our laws.....and (as you mention) never mentions what the immigration laws are in their country.

I don't necessarily fault someone coming here illegally to help feed their family, but that doesn't mean that we can't have immigration laws and enforce them. It is a tough issue and will require a balanced response.

14. Which question is verboten?
I don't get you Americans. You have the silliest discussions. If these people are in the USA illegally, then why all this noise? They should not be in the USA illegally, right? Why not send them to their respective nations, and have a program to allow legal immigrants? This way I can sign up and get a visa. I am not going to go to the USA as an illegal, but I do like the idea of a legal program which allows more educated people to go to the USA. And we can do a lot more than those gardeners and others who compete against the american poor. We will compete against the american rich :-)

Gee, it's so simple! Just deport all the illegals! What a marvellous concept us silly Americans never thought of. Except, oh, there might be a small problem.. could it be there's MILLIONS of illegal immigrants here, and it isn't that simple???
I guess that doesn't matter though, huh? It's so simple. If only we had the courage to break up families and ruin lives to purify this great nation of the illegals. Guess it doesn't matter that so many productive and contributing members of society here would be forced to leave.

Tell you what, let's hope they do pass a law allowing more educated people here. That way you'll be barred access.

25. & just to add to your edification, we in the U.S. have an aversion to "showing papers" because
it gives "the authorities" license to abuse that power of demanding to see our "papers."

If they don't like your looks--a hippie? a teenager? overweight? black? bald? transgendered? have an Obama sticker on your car, or wearing a peace button? theoretically they can stop you on the pretext that you look like an "illegal immigrant" (whatever that is supposed to look like) and harass you, demanding to see your papers. In this case, it is aimed specifically at Latinos--which is egregious in and of itself as it is, but what is to stop them from using the pretext of "checking for illegal immigrants" to target anyone they choose?

it would benefit you to acquaint yourself with something we here in the U.S. call the Bill of Rights, specifically the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution: "The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated; and no Warrants shall issue but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

That means they must have EVIDENCE of your link to a crime, not just your "looks"--not the fact that you "look like" an illegal immigrant, which means they are specifically targeting anyone who "looks Mexican."

During the Nazi German occupation of part of the USSR, residents of Restov (at least) who could not produce the official stamped paper they'd been given showing they were citizens of that city (& supposedly confirming they were not Jewish) were shot. Problem solved, no?!

By the way, if you are Latino, I suggest you not visit Arizona if you do indeed come to the U.S. You will learn firsthand why so many find this "law" abhorrent and might not be so flip and callous about it, like one of our DU friends who is planning to "enjoy the Grand Canyon" rather than let some annoying "politics" stand in the way of HIS vacation.

15. well I have tried to open a discussion about this issue but ...
Edited on Mon May-10-10 09:23 PM by SargeUNN
when I started a threat to get people who live in areas that this issue is so large, and that would help everyone know more about what all is involved, only 2 replies with one saying they didn't know, got less than 100 views, so I figure everyone knows everything about it already, or they are happy in their lack of knowledge. Too bad because this issue really is far more involved than just racism, and such, and lack of knowledge and interest in the topic only helps keep the dangerous parts of it from be resolved. Oh well, guess that is America these days. Of course I have lived in Arizona for 3 years, done progressive talk radio since I got here, interviewed both anti-immigration, pro-immigration people, and would love to have some of those who have a deep knowledge of the issue help give what you won't read in any article. Sad I think, and I always thought progressives and liberals were suppose to be the ones wanting to have the facts and knowledge. Guess, at least on this issue that just isn't the case.

27. Boycott Brewer, Not Arizona
Thanks to SB1070, the rest of the nation recently learned what Arizona Democrats have long known: Extremist Republicans control our state government. But now there is momentum in Arizona and a unique chance to take back our state. The Arizona Democratic Party has launched a nationwide campaign - Arizona Fights Back (www.arizonafightsback.com) to send a strong message: Don't boycott Arizona. Instead, help us change Arizona by electing Democrats.

We must stop Jan Brewer and the far-right Republicans who have taken over the state Legislature. With more funding, resources and field operations, the Arizona Democratic Party can help more Democrats get elected and restore balance to Arizona's government. Democrats will never let divisive, extremist measures like SB1070 see the light of day!

To learn more about the Arizona Fights Back campaign, why the state Democratic Party is firmly against a boycott of Arizona, and how we hope to mobilize voters between now and November, please visit ArizonaFightsBack.com.
