Connecticut Nursing Home Workers Win Back Pay After Ten Years
Source: Workers Independent News

More than 10 years since they went on strike and many were replaced by permanent replacement workers, some nursing home workers in Connecticut are receiving back pay. Jesse Russell reports:

The payments will range from $55 to more than $65,000 for 133 current and former nursing home workers at Avery heights nursing home in Hartford, Connecticut. The nearly $2.6 million in lost pay, pension contributions, and interest will be made available to the workers by a representative of the National Labor Relations Board today (Tuesday). In November of 1999 the workers went on strike and in December the nursing home began hiring permanent replacement workers, but failed to inform the workers and the union representing the workers. When a deal was made in January the nursing home only took back workers if their jobs hadn’t been filled by replacement workers – only 78 of the striking workers were given their jobs back. The case was taken to court where it was ruled that the move by the nursing home was illegal and they were ordered to pay benefits and back pay. Eventually the case made it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court which let the lower court rulings stand.
