Red Cross confirms 'secret jail' in Bagram, Afghanistan
Source: BBC News

The US airbase at Bagram in Afghanistan contains a facility for detainees that is distinct from its main prison, the Red Cross has confirmed to the BBC.

Nine former prisoners have told the BBC that they were held in a separate building, and subjected to abuse.

The US military says the main prison, now called the Detention Facility in Parwan, is the only detention facility on the base.

However it has said it will look into the abuse allegations made to the BBC.

4. Shameful. I could not be more embarrassed of our AMORAL "leadership" as a ...
supposedly civilized, first world nation.

Is it any wonder that the rest of the world loathes and/or fears us?

8. De-evolution! We are far from civilized, just look around at the disregard for each other and nature
Capitalistic greed trumps humanity, while values and compassion cease to exist. We (the US) put ourselves on a self rightious pedestal; yet we are as despicable as those we condemn.

5. If there's nothing to hide
why can't the Red Cross visit, and see for themselves. Or allow a member of the press?
It's the same kind of logic the gov't uses in terms of compromising personal privacy in this country: "if you're innocent, you shouldn't have anything to worry about."

7. It was a point of pride that the Red Cross would never be allowed in the door
It was a point of pride that the Red Cross would never be allowed in the door, Jeff says. This is important because it defied the Geneva Conventions, which require that the Red Cross have access to military prisons. "Once, somebody brought it up with the colonel. 'Will they ever be allowed in here?' And he said absolutely not. He had this directly from General McChrystal and the Pentagon that there's no way that the Red Cross could get in — they won't have access and they never will. This facility was completely closed off to anybody investigating, even Army investigators."

and this is a prime example of how sick they are. They even kept it secret because they too realize how fucked up their own actions are, and how indefensable it is to torture anybody!

...that we even know about the Guantanamo abuses.

Further, it is because of an Obama policy (reversing that of Dubya's cabal) that the ICRC is given lists with the names of every prisoner taken and held.

I look forward to the second-day story on this. And K&R.

Edited because I can't spell Guantanamo without checking.

President Obama is a committed supporter of human rights. Is the military withholding this information from him? And isn't that insubordination?

Id really like to know. Please dont tell me after 17 months he's "unaware" of this. No one is buying that anymore. Bush and Cheney are laughing and gloating over this. Really disturbing stuff that Obama is continuing.

34. Will do!
I was held in a detention area, recently, where I was placed on exhibit, in a glass and metal box, for others. I felt singled out and humiliated, for crimes of mere circumstance. I had no red cross contact, amnesty international knew nothing about me, and my body parts were pressed and fondled while the guards laughed and joked.

That's what an airport flight out of Portland, Oregon, one way, will get you.

I could try to insist that this is an egregious violation of my human rights, and scream at the top of my lungs about it.... or I could point out that being frisked is different from gang rape, and that calling every temporary transfer facility a "secret prison" is insulting to those who died in secret death camps.
