Poll: Support for More Offshore Oil Drilling Plummets

In the wake of the growing environmental disaster brought about by the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico, Americans have turned far less supportive of increased drilling for oil and natural gas off the U.S. coastline, according to a new CBS News survey.

Forty-six percent of Americans now say the support offshore drilling - a 16 point drop from the 64 percent who backed such drilling back in July of 2008, when "drill, baby, drill" was an oft-chanted Republican campaign slogan.

Forty-one percent, meanwhile, say the costs and risks of offshore drilling are too great - up from 28 percent in the summer of 2008.

The Obama administration ended the moratorium on new offshore drilling off some coastal areas prior to the collapse of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig site, though no new drilling had yet been authorized. It has vowed not to authorize new drilling until the cause of the Gulf leak is clear.

9. No shit! This has the potential to be one of the worst ecological disasters in our lifetimes...

...and the corporate-owned and controlled "Main Stream Media" mentions it only when it has to. If the majority of Americans knew just how bad this "leak" was, and just how badly this will affect the environment for years, there would be rioting in the streets against the petroleum cartels. Of all the powerful corporate behemoths, the petroleum corporations and the cartels that have coalesced into, have become the most wealthy and powerful entities on the planet. Consider the influence of the Texas-American Petroleum Cartel. They've owned at least three of the past five Presidents of the United States, and are using the power and might of their symbiotic twin, the American Military/Industrial Complex, to fight their resource wars. We invaded, and now occupy, both Iraq and Afghanistan for petroleum and pipelines. It's that sordidly simple.

And now we are being told from all quarters: "don't worry, out best and brightest are working on it." Of course they are. But it may not be enough. There is a possibility that this "leak" may not be stoppable. Remember this is at a 22,000 foot depth. And there was no back-up plan for just this type of uber-disaster. And even worse, the drilling company--and the principal: BP--knew drilling at this depth was courting disaster. In fact, the drill rig was only licensed and permitted to drill 18,000-20,000 feet. The technology simply does not exist to make a well this deep safe.

6. In spite of the media's failure to report on this much, this is heartening:

"A majority of Americans say they have heard or read "a lot" about the oil leak, and more than four in five have heard at least something about it. Just 14 percent say they have heard not much or nothing about the leak."

Of course the article also said the Obama administration wasn't going to authorize any new drilling, linking to a April 30th article. Of course in the last 24 hours the administration approved 27 new drilling permits. :grr:

15. Well, my husband who is not into politics came home from work the other day and told me

that offshore drilling sucks. He was really pissed about the effect on the environment in the Gulf and people loosing their livelihoods. So I think this will change the non ideological types for sure.
