APNewsBreak: Vermont church to settle 26 priest sex cases with $17 million payment
Source: LA Times

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — A lawyer for former altar boys suing Vermont's Catholic church says the diocese has agreed to settle 26 outstanding priest sex abuse lawsuits for $17 million.

Attorney Jerome F. O'Neill says details of the settlement will be announced Thursday in Burlington.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington has been sued by dozens of former altar boys accusing it of negligent hiring. Many of the cases concerned defrocked Rev. Edward Paquette, who was the target of allegations before he transferred to Vermont in the mid-1970s.

Last month, a judge set a Sept. 20 trial date for the cases unless they could be settled out of court.

5. And that, right there...
Is why my father, a lifelong Catholic, stopped giving money at church ($20 - $100 per week) and then stopped going altogether.

I feel so bad for him.

And so bad for the kids who (I assume) used the summer camp that now has to be sold to pay for the crimes of pedophiles and their enablers.

What a sad, sorry mess.

7. hopefully its changed, but being an altar boy for the Lord, pretty much assured you that you were
going to have a priest at some point try and bugger you... how sad is that? I am so glad I wasn't raised Catholic. prayers for all those hurt, and shame on the "leaders" of the church that turned a blind eye to that sh*t so many types it'd turn your face red to know the full truth.

9. the perv priests have more access to little boys than the avg male & news stories back up the fact
that the Catholic dioceses and archdioceses across this country kept shuffling around the offenders, which gave them more access. I never said all priests, but it has sadly been show that it was systemic.
