CEO says Apollo 13 moon mission ‘did not stop the space program’

msnbc.com staff and news service reports
updated 40 minutes ago

HAMMOND, La. - BP's chief executive has spoken out against a ban on deep-water oil exploration following the Gulf of Mexico disaster.

Tony Hayward, speaking to BBC radio, said the problems which affected the Apollo 13 moon mission had not resulted in the space program being halted and plane crashes did not stop people flying.

However he also said that significant changes should be made to the oil industry as a result of the rig explosion on 20 April, which he described as a "transforming event," the BBC reported.

He was speaking as BP tried the latest method to stop the continuing flow of oil into the Gulf from a broken pipe on the mile-deep sea bed, which has created a slick at least as large as Rhode Island and Delaware combined.

10. Apollo 13 ended happily in five days
These massive fuckups don't have the first clue how to stop this catastrophe, let alone reverse the damage already done.

2. Actually Apollo 13 did kinda stop the space program
The moon missions were severely curtailed. Many believe that the Apollo 18, 19 and 20 moon missions were canceled from the fallout of Apollo 13. The space program never recovered its full glory after Apollo 13

4. Well okay, let's just ban BP.
They've got the same concern for their workers and the environment as any scummy U.S. coal company.

13. That is actually an interesting idea
Ban BP. Punish their lack of standards and safety by taking THEIR priviledges away. Now THAT would send a pretty strong message to other companies methinks. I am pretty sure that the other companies would spend a couple of bucks, even if it were not required by law, to make their rigs less prone to these types of things.

5. FAIL.
The fate of Apollo 13 would have NO repercussions on the planet's ecosystem.

What a bullshit analogy to use to justify their incompetence and most importantly, their greed. They STILL continue to try to find ways to collect the oil rather than seal the hole.

Edited on Sat May-15-10 10:52 AM by scentopine
cause USA to start two fucking wars and implement a virtual police state where the government voided civil liberties and the constitution, continues torture and rendition and reads every fucking email and records every fucking cell phone they can get a hold of.

Space is a real frontier. Destroying an ocean so people can drive their Chevy Suburban's at $2.60/ gallon? Not so much.

Hayward - you are the very picture of the perfect corporate douche bag (*). This is your 911. You are the terrorist here. Your brand of terror is much more sophisticated and politically correct, of course.

(*) I must say though, lucky for you our current administration is filled with current and former corporate douche bags (thanks, Rahm), you'll find a sympathetic ear in Washington.

20. This ain't rocket science, asshole
He said yesterday that BP had more resources than need for their mistake.
Repeat: more resources than necessary for the size of this spill.

So why are Nat guard soldiers putting up oil traps?
Why is it the Air Force spraying dispersants?

You are sucking off the dick of uncle sam and saying that you have more than is needed and yet the oil still flows?

Arrest that bastard and make him post billions in bail money.
