US may have to divert the Mississippi to fight oil slick’s spread

By Agence France-Presse

For the US Coast Guard, the mighty Mississippi River is its "best friend" in the fight against the oil spill.

Trying to keep the spreading oil at bay, authorities have diverted the river into dozens of canals. But fishermen and ecologists are concerned an environmental disaster could be in the offing.

After crossing the United States from north to south, the 2,350-mile (3,800-kilometer) long river delivers its waters to the Gulf of Mexico through a sprawling delta formed by dozens of canals.

With the outflow measuring between 7,000 and 20,000 cubic meters of water per second, the Mississippi represents a powerful natural ally of US authorities scrambling to control what could become the worst oil spill in US history.

3. The Right wing hasn't figured that out yet
They are trying to blame President Obama for the catastrophe.

Let's watch the price quadruple of all of those imported goods that come through the Mississippi and see how they react.

2. At this point, however
wouldn't this be more likely to put the thing into the Gulf loop currents?

I confess that I have not yet read the story, which I will.

4. Oil Geyser It's NOT a spill
From what i have managed to round up on here an my past knowledge derived from Anti Submarine Warfare,(ASW),i understand the ocean currents. This oil is already in the "LOOP" in the gulf of MEX. How much will get there remains to be seen. I will predict this mess will hit SC,NC than go out to sea bound for jolly old England. We will need to watch an see when it shot's the FL Straights. This will be a very good indicator of how much Kim Chi we as a nation are in. The gulf fisheries are done for about a decade or more. Stop the DAMMM drilling an stop NOW! Thanks for reading...... Bill

5. Fishermen in Ms. tell me that
the gulf will not be good to fish in for over 20 years at least. They tell me all the shrimp, oysters, and other fish are either dead or contaminated.

8. That isn't true, yet, anyway. We are in the middle of another
shrimp season here in South Central Louisiana. The shrimp are still good, no evidence of exposure yet. I will be buying some soon, and do not expect they will taste any different, or the season would have been pulled. Don't know what the future holds, however.

10. That will surely fix everything!
Great. We can then resume ultra-deep-sea oil extraction in a safe and secure manner.

Glad that's all over with.

12. It is the worst blowout in US history, so far.
Since there is no likelihood that ultra-deep-sea oil excavation will be banned, there will certainly be more blowouts, with possibly an even worse impact.

So I think the honest headline would be "Gulf disaster worst oil blowout so far"
