KABUL Afghanistan — A plane carrying at least 40 passengers on a domestic flight crashed Monday near the Salang Pass north of the Afghan capital, the police chief of the Kabul International Airport said. There was no immediate word on casualties.

Rescuers were on their way to the crash site near the 12,700-foot (3,800-meter) -high Salang Pass, a major route through the Hindu Kush mountains that connects the capital to the north.

Airport Police Chief Mohammad Asif Jabar Khil said the plane went down about 60 miles (100 kilometers) from Kabul.

Police chief Abdul Razaq Yabyaqoubi of northern Kunduz province said the plane left there at 8:30 a.m. Monday, but never arrived in the capital.

Source: telegraph UK

Chris Carter, David Taylor and Daniel Saville were named as the three Brits on board the flight. A spokesman for the British embassy in Kabul confirmed that three British nationals were on board although did not give names.

Afghan police and Nato helicopters began combing mountains near the Salang Pass north of Kabul after air traffic controllers lost touch with the flight on Monday morning.

Six foreigners were among 38 passengers and six crew aboard the flight from the turbulent northern province of Kunduz, where German forces have seen heavy fighting in the past year, to Kabul.

The Pamir airline commercial flight went down around 60 miles north of the Afghan capital according to Mohammad Asif Jabar Khil, police chief at Kabul airport.
