Gov. 'not involved' in Fremont issue (hiring illegal immigrants or renting property to them)

LINCOLN -- Gov. Dave Heineman says he's not getting involved in the controversial proposal in his hometown that's aimed at curbing illegal immigration.

Asked during his call-in radio program Monday about Fremont's proposal, which goes before voters there next month, the governor said that he doesn't get involved in local issues.

Snip: Last month, the Nebraska Supreme Court ruled that Fremont residents should be allowed to vote on a proposal to ban businesses from hiring illegal immigrants or renting property to them. At that time, Heineman said he hadn't read the Fremont proposal.

The (Ne) Supreme Court case was spawned after the Fremont City Council declined to put the matter on the ballot. The election now is scheduled for June 21.

I don't know about the renting part, but I always thought it was at least supposed to be against the law for a business to hire an illegal immigrant.

Requiring all businesses and landlords to verify ALL people doesn't seem discriminatory.

don't follow the law, the law is wrong? Sorry, it's those same buisness leaders and landlords that should have their records reviewed to make sure they are reviewing all applicants.

9. Well, what should we do???

I have posted my story MANY times here, so I won't go through it all again. Suffice it to say, growing up, my father was a drywaller. Illegals broke union after union here, wages took a nose dive, MANY people lost their livelihood and my family was close to homeless. The problem NEEDS to be addressed.

Arizona comes up with a law targeting the illegals and people are upset. Fremont comes up with a law targeting those businesses profiting most off of illegals and people are upset. The only other option is to not do a damn thing I certainly will not support that. As a Democrat, I do not support the destruction of unions and people working class people on the street.

Or was it the employers that figured out they could get cheap labor so they didn't need union workers?

You can't put this all on "Illegals", what responsibility do you apply to the employers that hired them?

Personally, while I believe that unions have for the most part been good for the working class American, sometimes they go too far.

It sounds to me that it was the employers that broke union after union, the illegals that they hired were just a way for them to get off cheap.

Let me ask again: If you cannot go against the illegals and you cannot go against the employers, what do you do?

Unless it's Section 8 housing, why would a landlord refuse to rent to the undocumented?

5. Knew he was a republican when he played the "secure the borders" card.

Repubs are determined to avoid comprehensive reform by playing the "secure the borders first" card as often and loudly as they can.

Facts are, of course, irrelevant to their wedge issue strategy. The Border Patrol has doubled in size; illegal border crossings have dropped by two-thirds, crime along the border and state-wide in Arizona are down and immigrants commit little of the crime there is; Obama is auditing employers (particularly large ones) to check the legality of their hires; and deportations are much higher (double in most months) what they were during Bush's administration.

Obama is not very popular in many immigrant communities and with pro-immigration organizations precisely because he has stepped up workplace enforcement, increased deportations and done little to push comprehensive immigration reform. None of this, of course, has the slightest effect on the republicans' tactic of yelling "Secure the borders!" as loud and often as possible (FOX helps immensely with this). Hey, if you hear enough on TV it must be true, right? :)
