NOAA: Tar balls off Key West related to Gulf spill
Source: wsvn-tv

KEY WEST, Fla. -- According to NOAA officials, some tar balls found off Key West Monday morning originated from the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Coast Guard picked up the 20 tar balls along a Key West beach and sent them out for testing. According to the test, some but not all of the tar balls originated from the Gulf spill. They are being send to a lab in Connecticut for further testing.

Officials fear this could indicate that the oil slick that resulted from the platform fire off Louisiana last month might head into the Keys by the end of the week.

The State Emergency Operations Center is aware of this discovery and has been fully briefed on the report of the tar balls being found in the Keys.

3. WSVN TV altered the article!!
It now says:
The Coast Guard picked up the 20 tar balls along a Key West beach and sent them to NOAA for examination. NOAA has not verified the connection, but they have forwarded the finds to a lab in Connecticut for further testing.

If they verify the connection, officials fear this could indicate that the oil slick that resulted from the platform fire off Louisiana last month might head into the Keys by the end of the week.

Instead of the original:
According to the test, some but not all of the tar balls originated from the Gulf spill.

10. that's annoying
That's happened to me before, but in those cases they logged the update at the end of the article so you could tell what changed. This article doesn't keep the original information in there. That's pretty disturbing...

9. other sources
The article cites other potential sources for tarballs being past fuel spills. There are also natural oil seeps around the Gulf, but I don't know where exactly. Once they run tests we can stop guessing hopefully. If this is from the spill then it's moving faster than even independent experts have expected.

I'm bothered that they edited the article without documenting what they changed.

7. What are those ignorant shitkicker politicians going to say now?
While the formerly white beaches are turning a gooey black, hopefully the citizens of Fl decide to wake up to these right wing Neanderthal pols that want everything from "drill baby, drill" to completely privatizing the whole goddamn school system. I am hoping that this will be the perfect storm (banks & oil companies & insurance corps) where the teabaggers and left wing unite on common ground to stop the corporate raping of ALL of us. All we need to join the rest of the criminal corporations is the drug companies, still waiting for that one.
