U.S. reaches deal on Iran sanctions
By Sam Youngman - 05/18/10 04:30 PM ET

The U.S. has agreed to sanctions against Iran proposed by the U.N. Security Council for their nuclear pursuits.

One senior administration official said the sanctions will "have an immediate chilling effect" on Iran's nuclear ambitions.

U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice was set to unveil the proposal, agreed to by skeptical council member nations Russia and China, at the United Nations Tuesday afternoon, just one day after Iran and Turkey announced a deal that some thought might derail U.S. efforts to win sanctions against Iran.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced the deal Tuesday morning before the start of a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing.

edit to add : 'Strong' new Iran sanctions UN resolution being tabled

Plans for a fourth set of UN sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programme are being circulated among all 15 members of the Security Council.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced earlier that the five, veto-wielding permanent members had agreed on a "strong" draft resolution.

4. That's actually what she said in the SFRC hearing
http://foreign.senate.gov/hearings/hearing/20100518/ (about 37 minutes up) "we have reached agreement on a strong draft" will go to the entire Security Council.

But, it sounds like the draft at least worked out the details. (Hillary was a bit testy later - about 110 minutes in on Turkey and Brazil's agreement. She said that Iran was pushed to that by the US/Russia/et al sanctions talk.

2. Iranian nuclear issue is about the balance of power in the Middle East
Edited on Tue May-18-10 05:36 PM by BunkerHill24
everyone who is blind to this fact is rooming with Crapola thinking.

Of course what we are seeing are of those neocons rejecting any deal reached with Iran, and want to bomb another Islamic country.

I think the Obama administration is missing a real opportunity to negotiate with Iran. He's listening a driven neocon group itching to BOMB another Muslim country....Israel supporters who would want us to bomb Iran....like Iraq.

3. Negotiate with Iran? How? Who in Iran really wants to negotiate?
They won't listen to the US; it's been tried.

And I am quite sure the folks in this admin don't want to bomb Iran despite what the neocons are saying.

5. No one wnat to listen to the US Administration when they behave as a mad dog
The Iranian nuclear issue is about the balance of power in the Middle East....and nothing to do in nuclear enrichment....more specifically the balance of power between Israel and Iran. This is why the United States is having difficult accepting anything proposed by the Iranians....and that of pressure coming from all sides of Israel supporters.

6. This stinks of bullshit.
In the particular sense that it implies that Russia & China have agreed to something.
