Power Play Over Immigration Law
Source: NBC Los Angeles

An Arizona utility commissioner said he's willing to pull the plug on Los Angeles if the city goes through with a boycott of his state.

In a letter to the city of LA, a member of Arizona's power commission said he would ask Arizona utility companies to cut off the power supply to Los Angeles. LA gets about 25 percent of its power from Arizona.

That is one commissioner who has that idea -- whether he can do that or not is another idea," said LA Councilman Dennis Zine. "They are the ones who have to make the move, not us."

The commissioner's power grid play is in response to the city's approval of a resolution directing city staff to consider which contracts with Arizona can be terminated.

1. riiiiight and I'm sure Arizona is giving them that power for free?
I wonder how much revenue it would cost Arizona to pull the plug on LA. I seriously think they SHOULD do it - just to see how engaging in kneejerk teabaggery ACTUALLY HAS ECONOMIC CONSEQUENCES.

It wouldn't occur to them that maybe what they're doing is absurd and wrong or there wouldn't BE boycotts to begin with? Nah - not even in their mental vocabulary - might makes right, and that's good enough.

3. It's not that easy

The power lines and transformers in AZ are specifically routed to L.A.

Lines and transformers to other areas can only provide so much power without a massive outlay of resources to upgrade the existing system or to re-route it to new markets.

9. It may not be that easy for another big reason:
From the story linked by the OP:

LaBonge met Wednesday morning with LA Department of Water and Power officials.

"We have right of ownership of the power plants," LaBonge told NBCLA. "We partially own them."

10. LOL!

Let's see AZ do something and have California come back and seize control over the plants.

8. Even if the infrastructure change were that simple, it wouldn't make any difference.
The market for electricity is whole: if someone else buys it, that's power they aren't buying from someone else, who will then sell to LA.

LA City Council is the one calling for reviewing contracts with an eye towards cancellation. Pierce dared them to live up to their position and cancel the contract, claiming they had other customers. This is mostly media fabrication

6. Some things NEVER change...
Almost 50 years ago, California had a no-fruit-importation law to protect their citrus crops from foreign insect infestations. I remember the border stop from Oregon. I thought the law made sense.

Not to be outdone, Arizona created similar border fruit checkpoints, but ONLY on the Cali border locations. A get-even gesture. Tourists could bring in anything from Utah or New Mexico, just not California.

So now it is the tourists themselves. Canadian snowbirds welcome all winter. Mexicans not. And let's cut all the power companies' income to punish Los Angeles. LOL.

Funny how some things never change.

11. Impossible to do so
the state of Ca. has part ownership so such an act isn't even an option. The guy has served in government before so he knows this I bet. He is just grandstanding for votes.

Edited on Wed May-19-10 02:45 PM by ProudDad
And who do you think has precedence for Colorado River Water BEFORE Phoenix gets it?

Right, L.A.!

So, Arizona, you wanna' cut our power from your coal plants and nuclear plant? Fine, we'll cut your water allotment -- no HUGE quantities of water, no power...

Go ahead, Make Our Day!

Dumb F*cks...

Arizona is a bat-shit crazy place where old white people keep voting for these Neanderthal idiots. Luckily, those white retirees are dying off (and not breeding).

The worm is turning...

And that's the REAL reason for these racist laws -- VOTER SUPPRESSION... They're trying to put off their inevitable loss of power in Arizona.
