Pakistan blocks access to YouTube in internet crackdown
Source: BBC News

Pakistan has blocked the popular video sharing website YouTube because of its "growing sacrilegious content".

Access to the social network Facebook has also been barred as part of a crackdown on websites seen to be hosting un-Islamic content.

On Wednesday a Pakistani court ordered Facebook to be blocked because of a page inviting people to draw caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad.

Some Wikipedia pages are also now being restricted, latest reports say.

11. I think it was this one
http://apniurdu.com/Translate.html

It also displayed their squiggly writing but I couldn't cut and paste those.

I think this tranlsation may be of more benefit for everyday use : http://apniurdu.com/Translate.pl?l=excuse+me+madame+my+watch+is+caught+on+your+suspended+belt&s=20&f=PNG&tr=1

17. Yup - Anglo saxon
Allowing for the fact that to us here in the UK Asian refers to those with Indian sub Continent roots only then the only significance to me of their accents is that it tells me out of general interest, when they're speaking, whether they're probably first generation immigrants or second generation. That's because their children invariably have pure english accents varying only by our north and south differences here etc. By concidence I had a reunion with some Asian guys I worked with back in the early '70s last week who were first generation and they still haven't lost their home accents. The exception was one of them who was second generation that far back - his parents came over in 1948 and he was born in Glasgow so has a broad Scottish accent.

These days really the only time their homeland accents get emphasised is when they're taking the Micky out of themselves. For example - got you youtube and search Goodness Gracious me.
e.g http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfpqfwt_cLg

What brought all this to mind was simply you saying "No lady Gaga for you!" but with the accent.

:hi:

2. The thing is
this crackdown is only going to last for a little while. Those facebook pages and youtube videos aren't all going to just disappear. This is the equivalent of Pakistan sticking its fingers in its ears and yelling, "La, la, la, I can't hear you!"

5. It's a really stupid move
These are the religious zealots using bullying tactics. Giving in to them is nothing but destructive. Sadly Pakistan gives in more often than not.

Amazingly the religious parties have virtually no political power, but they can rile up thousands of people who have probably never heard of Facebook in their lives.

And then they use a strawman argument like: "Oh, so you don't want to ban Facebook? So then clearly you support insulting and humiliating the Prophet!" So for a govt official to disagree with them is tantamount to supporting the "blashphemers."

You're right, it is going to be temporary. But unfortunately it emboldens the zealots to act like this again.

19. From Algeria to Indonesia, same fear from the govts
They fear their radicals and give in. But I see the same in Europe with the right wing govts and the extreme right. Remarkably, it's happening in France and Italy right now. In both cases (Europe and muslim countries), radicals never represent more than 20-25% of the electors. In Pakistan, it's around 10-15% I believe.
