New jobless claims rise unexpectedly
The largest rise in three months shows precarious labor market

WASHINGTON - The number of people filing new claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly rose last week by the largest amount in three months. The big surge was a setback to hopes that layoffs were declining.

Applications for unemployment benefits rose to 471,000 last week, up by 25,000 from the previous week, the Labor Department said Thursday. It was the first increase in five weeks and the biggest jump since a gain of 40,000 in February.

The forecast had been for claims to fall by around 4,000 from the previous week. The large rise in new claims is evidence of how volatile the job market remains, even as the economy grows.

The total for new claims was the highest since claims stood at 480,000 on April 10. It also pushed the average for the last four weeks to 453,500.

2. The economy is growing? I don't believe it really is.
We now hear there will be record foreclosures and Fannie and Freddie still allow people who can't afford houses to buy them.

Sadly, Obama hasn't fixed the root causes and so our economy is going to get worse, not better.

7. It's sure not unexpected for those of us unemployed for years now.
Everytime there has been an OP claiming otherwise, I see myself and many other in my boat, comment that there sure seem to be even fewer legit jobs on the jobs lines/sites/etc. and that it sure doesn't look like employment is doing any better than last year.

But of course, we're all just naysayers, we don't know nothin'.

11. So sorry. My bad.
This is my fault. I got laid off, and applied for unemployment.

I wish it wasn't so.

:hi:

12. yeah - it's all your "fault"!
sorry this happened to you, bozo. I am pretty sure I'll be joining you sometime this year. The medical center I work at is going to layoff 500+ people soon and I'm almost positive that our department is getting the axe.

15. If one disregards the newly unemployed, which tends to be volatile, employment is quite high
Looking at Core Employment, excluding the sectors where change occurs, demonstrates that Employment is historically high.
