Oil threatens French-speaking Cajuns, native Choctaw

MONTEGUT, Louisiana (AFP) – The encroaching Gulf of Mexico oil spill may have sounded the death knell for the vanishing cultures of the last French-speaking Cajun communities and Louisiana native Americans.

Here in the deep Louisiana south, the Cajun people and the French-speaking Choctaw Indians can do nothing but maintain an anxious vigil, angrily accusing US authorities of abandoning them to their fate.

Since the April 20 explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig unleashed a huge oil leak in the Gulf, no barriers have been erected to protect their home on a speck of land off the Louisiana coast called Isle de Jean Charles.

I happen to have some very strong roots to these Indian folks in Louisiana that were living in the French quarter not that horribly long ago.

Of course the government could care less about my relatives. They are the Choctaw Indians and they don't exist anymore (or so the government thought).

The sooner BP goes bankrupt the better! They are killing everything in their tracks along with all my relations!

I love Louisiana and its culture (spent quite a bit of time there with cherished ones)

This is a crime against humanity. And all nature.

Heads should roll. (although I am against the death penalty - this is murder ---but I do mean it figuratively)

They should be hauled before the bench at the hague and imprisoned for life.

Bush, Cheney, the heads of BP --- al of them.
