(Rand) Paul admits political slip in civil rights remarks
Source: MSNBC

Kentucky Republican Senate hopeful faces storm after questioning '64 law

In the wake of Rand Paul’s comments on MSNBC’s "Rachel Maddow Show" Wednesday night questioning provisions of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the Kentucky Republican Senate nominee said Thursday he supported the law and would not favor its repeal.

Paul also said that appearing on Maddow’s show "was a poor political decision.”

In an interview with radio talk show host Laura Ingraham, Paul implicitly acknowledged that he’d given his opponents ammunition to assail him.

It was a turnabout from Wednesday night, when Paul told Maddow, “You’re an intelligent person; I like being on your show."

In a statement released by his campaign Thursday Paul said, “Even though this matter was settled when I was 2, and no serious people are seeking to revisit it except to score cheap political points, I unequivocally state that I will not support any efforts to repeal the Civil Rights Act of 1964.”

1. "I will not murder an infant on live television" sayeth this genius. Wow! What a principled
statement to come out with.

Now I am convinced that Rand Paul is indeed a good person without a prejudiced thought in his head.

He kept saying forcing a restaurant to allow blacks in, is the same as forcing them to allow people to carry guns in restaurants.

Now that'd be OK if blacks were sticks, knives, or baseball bats, instead of real human beings. But he was, in effect, comparing black people, real humans, to guns, inanimate objects, to make his point.

Seems like that was a pretty huge problem with his argument, one that Rachel didn't seem to pick up on quickly enough. I understand what he was trying to do, I just don't approve of reducing black people, to inanimate objects.

22. Ah, but to racists like Paul
the two things are the same. Blacks and other minorities are "loaded guns" to them.

31. Not inanimate objects. PROPERTY.
I'm sure he might equally have made the argument about forcing people to allow goats in restaurants.

Of course, he used guns so he could pick up that vast herd of kneejerk NRA disciples. Not a lot of pro-goat lobbies donating to campaigns.

It was a poor political decision to associate with teabaggers, and to open your big mouth about your hateful ideology.

29. Pandora's box
Unfortunately McCain didn't properly vet Palin, but wanted a female to win the hearts of women who would have voted for Hillary. Big difference, Hillary is intelligent! As in the fable, once the box is opened it let's loose all of life's evil on the world, and can never be closed again. What I find scary is the devotees of people who will say and do anything to be elected, who follow and believe their every word without question!

oh bland paul, you little scamp.

You thought your half witted libertarian stance would play well in general America.

However, you found out that, tisk, general America isn't as fucking crazy as you are, so now you are going to try and move to the middle. Thus losing your right wing mouth breathing tea ball licking baggers.

Awwww, ain't that a fucking shame.

When you bring the stupid to the table be prepared to have people beat you up.

poor poor little rich boy.

27. If Social Security is the 3rd rail of American politics,
I guess that the Civil Rights Act must be in this post-segregation era the 99th rail.

Have other conservatives besides Paul appeared on Maddow's show before? I know that the corporate lobbyist Richard Berman and the discredited, disqualified ex-gay therapist Richard A. Cohen have.

30. It wasn't just on Rachel's show.
Why did the question come up in the first place? Because:

He made similar comments on NPR the same day apparently.

He made similar comments to some Kentucky newspaper when he was seeking their endorsement.

And NOW guess what? He's FOR all parts of the Civil Rights Act according to his spokespeople.

So now he's probably lost even the small contingent of Tea Partyers who applauded him for having the "guts" to be so openly regressive about equal/human/civil rights that he would plunge us back to Jim Crow days.

But, no matter. NOW he's for the Civil Rights Act. What? When did he ever say anything different?

34. Shot himself in the foot so early in his campaign. What a shame!
:sarcasm:

The individual version of the states rights arguments in which Republicans have always tried to cloak their "Southern Strategy" ever since passage of the Civil Rights Act.

Just for the record: The Civil Rights movement benefited more than one group. The Civil Rights Act protects women and all minorities, not only African Amerians. It seems to me people tend to forget that.

40. I lived in the South during Jim Crow
I went to college right around the corner from Lester Maddox' Pickrick Restaurant...(he was a big "joke" to anyone with an IQ above 2 digits just as ronny ray-gun was)...but a dangerous "joke" with his pistol and ax handles...

I felt the hate, I heard the bigotry, I marveled at the loathing (based in fear) that average white southerners had for one group of people because of the color of their skin...

I chose to ride in the back of the bus in Atlanta -- there was generally a better class of people back there...Of course, being white, I HAD the choice...

Mr. Paul reminds of the mealy-mouthed bigots I heard clothing their evil sickness by using the rubrics of "freedom" and "private property rights" and "state's rights"...

Ah, taking the name of the revered (clueless, writer of fiction) Rand, Mr. Paul's a worthy successor to Lester Maddox and George Wallace (the old one) and Ross Barnett and Haley Barbour ( http://crooksandliars.com/jon-perr/haley-barbour-neo-confederate-gop )...

Signed;

The Loony Left
