Oil Hits Pelican Nesting Area

Cat Island (Plaquemines Parish)-- Oil began washing onto Cat Island in Plaquemines Parish, where hundreds of Louisiana Brown Pelicans are nesting.

By late afternoon, Plaquemines Parish crews began deploying boom, but a Fox 8 crew traveled through a large area of oil approaching the island from about 3 miles to the southeast.

P.J. Hahn, Director of Plaquemines Parish Coastal Zone Management, described the scene as the "most dramatic" he had seen since oil from the BP spill began hitting marshes earlier this week.

"When it comes in, its comes in and you won't be able to stop it," Nungesser said. "And they still don't have a plan. This is our worst nightmare. It's working through the cane and will kill everything in there and when it leaves, it'll leave with the marsh."

They've gone from being critically endangered to enjoying a robust recovery in my lifetime. And it looks like they might collapse again, due to the same problems that caused them to collapse in the first place: human error.

I can't look at those photos. I've seen the dead pelican on the beach. But we'll never try anyone for this mass murder.

Really, tell yourself this horrible death is a blessing, because the fish are dead and they would have starved anyway.

4. One of my favorite memories

as a child is watching the pelicans glide above the waves while visiting the beach on vacations. Their wings motionless as they stayed a constant distance from the water even as they encountered waves. I always loved those birds.

Those poor animals, they have no idea of what is wrong, they will still try to survive and are not able to sense instinctively the need to abandon their nests, and move away from the growing danger there... :cry:
