BP-owned Alaska oil pipeline shut after spill

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, May 25 (Reuters) - The Trans-Alaska Pipeline, partly owned by BP (BP.L: Quote, Profile, Research), shut down on Tuesday after a crude oil spill, drastically cutting supply out of Alaska's oilfields.

The accident comes at a difficult time for BP -- the largest single owner of the pipeline, holding 47 percent of Alyeska -- as it struggles to plug a gushing Gulf of Mexico oil well .

The shutdown followed a series of mishaps that resulted from a scheduled fire-command system test at Pump Station 9, about 100 miles south of Fairbanks, said Alyeska Pipeline Service Co, the operator of the 800-mile (1,287 km) oil line said.

The power outage triggered opening of relief valves, causing an unspecified volume of crude oil to overflow a storage tank into a secondary containment. There were no injuries, but the work site was evacuated, Alyeska said.

4. Palin was involved in the Trans Alaska Pipeline
I wonder what her role was in this...

There was a BP oil spill in Prudhoe Bay right before she was elected. I wonder what happened there too.

You know, there also has been a lot of monkey business with the oil royalties paid out in Alaska during the Bush administration.

I have a suspicion we will start to find out a lot of really snarky things going on with Palin and oil. Just a hunch.

24. I was listening to my nephew, who is on a rig tender boat for the
platforms in our cook inlet, talking to rig guys who came into the shop for bolts. They said the state of alaska was pulling back all the exemptions, etc they gave out to the oil companies before this happened. no one wants to be responsible for anything more happening in the deep water drilling. It may close a couple of rigs like Anna. So, someone gets it.

10. BP-owned Alaska oil pipeline shut after spill

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, May 25 (Reuters) - The Trans-Alaska Pipeline, partly owned by BP (BP.L: Quote, Profile, Research), shut down on Tuesday after spilling several thousand barrels of crude oil, drastically cutting supply out of Alaska's oilfields.

The accident comes at a difficult time for BP -- the largest single owner of the pipeline operator, holding 47 percent -- as it struggles to plug a gushing Gulf of Mexico oil well .

The shutdown followed a series of mishaps that resulted from a scheduled fire-command system test at Pump Station 9, about 100 miles (161 km) south of Fairbanks, said Alyeska Pipeline Service Co, the operator of the 800-mile oil line.

The power outage triggered opening of relief valves, causing an unspecified volume of crude oil to overflow a storage tank into a secondary containment. There were no injuries, but the approximately 40 people at the work site were evacuated, Alyeska spokeswoman Michele Egan said.

15. You underestimate the power of the dark side

If there was something that could force Palin to shut her trap, we would be demanding it be sent to the Gulf of Mexico ASAP.

23. Bullshit a 'bad time'.
Yeah, they have to pay billions in fines, ok, no problem, we'll fuck up supply so the price of oil goes back north of $90 a barrel, and it'll be chump change. No worries.

25. Getting your knickers in a knot when things actually go right is counter productive.
Just speculating here, but it seems reasonable.

As part of a routine test, power gets cut. Pumps stop. Pressure surges behind pump. Pressure relief valves operate exactly as they should. Overflow is caught in pit specifically designed to catch such overflows.

Strikes me, thats a far better scenario than a pipe splitting somewhere out in the middle of the tundra.

Obviously there are some issues here, since the outcome would appear to have been unexpected by the operator, but overall it would appear that safety systems did what safety systems are supposed to do and kept a potential disaster safely contained where it could do no, or minimal harm.

The outrage you're expending on what is ultimately a non-issue, would far better serve the ourangutang's of Borneo.

29. if they shut enough pipelines down, prices will go up and BP can reopen them to high profits

our problem is they win on both ends of the equation, eventually
