San Jose Mercury NewsPresident Barack Obama began a 19-hour sweep into the Bay Area on Tuesday night to raise money for Democrats and visit a Fremont solar plant that has become a poster child for his administration's stimulus bill.
Obama attended two fundraisers for Sen. Barbara Boxer, who is facing a fierce battle in the fall to win a fourth term. It was his second trip to California in as many months to assist the liberal Democrat.
"We've got a lot on our plate right now, so I don't travel for just anybody," Obama told Democratic donors Tuesday night at San Francisco's Fairmont Hotel. "But when it comes to Barbara Boxer, I'm a lot like you: When she calls and says she needs help, we're gonna give her some help."
Though Boxer sailed to victory in her last election, the state's economic woes have left her facing her strongest challenge since she was elected to the Senate in 1992.

In fact, one of my friends from college (and a local community organizer and fellow member of the Democratic Caucus on campus) was in attendance too! Here's some good news if you're tired of reading about BP's idiocy behind a ruptured oil rig or stories of longtime unemployed people. Who cares about "throwing out the incumbments" when Republicans will be even WORSE? I read the websites of Boxer's primary opponents, Brian Quintana and Mickey Kaus (Kaus = a Blue Dog?) and decided that I'll vote for Boxer most likely on June 8.
