Katla Volcano In Iceland Shows Signs Of Increased Activity
Source: The Clare Herald

Fears are growing that the Katla volcano in Iceland could erupt in the coming days after volcanic activity at the site increased by over 200% in recent days.

Geophysicists at Iceland’s Institute of Earth Sciences say Katla will be locally and globally damaging.

Seismic readings of the volcano in recent days indicate the tremors around the area have increased substantially.

The eruption of the long-dormant Eyjafjallajökull volcano has prompted fears among some geophysicists that it might trigger an eruption at the larger and more dangerous Katla. In the past 1,000 years, all three known eruptions of Eyjafjallajökull have triggered subsequent Katla eruptions. The last large eruption at Katla was in 1918 but there have been small eruptions at Katla as recently as 1955.

An eruption of Katla volcano has the potential to be more devastating than the current eruption of Eyjafjallajokull.

Icelandic President Ólafur Grímsson has warned Governments around Europe that a significant eruption at the volcano is ‘coming close’. He said: "We have prepared ... it is high time for European governments and airline authorities all over Europe and the world to start planning for the eventual Katla eruption".

1. Uh oh. I think I read that Katia usually followed suit when that first
Icelandic volcano went off. :scared:

Yep...

There are concerns that the plume of dust from the volcano could carry on for some time. The last time that Eyjafjallajokull erupted in 1821 it is thought to have continued for two years.

An even bigger worry is that on each of the three occasions in Iceland’s history that the volcano has erupted, dating back to 920AD, it has led to an even more violent volcano, Katia, erupting soon afterwards.

The records show that Katia can shoot up enormous plumes of ash, gas and acid high into the atmosphere, blocking out the Sun’s energy and cooling the climate.

2. I hope the volcano has the decency to wait until Saturday
I'm in Texas, heading up to Washington today, and have to get back to Germany by Sunday. I would rather not have to take a boat.

3. Interview in a danish newspaper today paints another picture
Edited on Wed May-26-10 06:20 AM by dbmk
Oddly enough, one of the leaders from the Nordic Vulcanological Institute was interviewed by a Danish newspaper yesterday and she is painting another picture.

She is basically saying that there is little reason to worry about a huge eruption - and if it blows there is good reason to believe it wont be bigger or even just as big as the Eyjafjallajökull eruption.

5. Lets hope so...
That would be the nail in the coffin for Europe's economy! And maybe us as well.

6. Here is the key statement...
"In the last approx. 1000 years have Katla erupted 20 times, and only six of these outbreaks have been decidedly large, including its latest real outbreak in 1918."

So its just a matter of odds.. do we feel lucky?

4. Oh dear
If you wonder why it says "the World"......if there was to be sufficient ash it could loop the planet and reach North America. It could also mean goodbye summer 2010 for the Northern hemishere. x(

7. Gah!
It has erupted after every eruption of E-Kull so far. Here's hoping the pattern is broken.

I've been wondering what's been taking her so long. She certainly has more patience than I do.

9. Here we go. Bjork's uncles have been warning about this.
Hope Europe has been preparing.

Oh, wait, we don't prepare for contingencies anymore in our hypercomplex industrial societies. If a problem arises, technology will fix it. Maybe some 4G network and a web page with a real time cam.

13. Now that's a plan!
We'll just sit around and wait for somebody else to prepare contingencies for our emergencies.

Won't somebody PLEASE, WIPE MY ASS!!!!!

Well, when you spend billions training people to be unthinking sheep, don't be surprised when that's what you get. Almost every aspect of pedagogy is geared to keeping people's creative (read: impish, subversive, dangerous) impulses in check. What are you gonna do; teach them to think for themselves?
