Elton John to perform in Morocco despite protest

British singer Elton John is to appear at a festival in Morocco on Wednesday despite calls for him to be banned.

Islamists had tried to prevent John's appearance, claiming the openly gay singer would offend public morals.

But organisers of the Mawazine festival in Rabat defended the decision to invite John, in the interests of "cultural tolerance".

Last week, a planned concert in Egypt was cancelled after John said in an magazine interview that Jesus was gay.

The artistic director of the Mawazine Festival Aziz Daki told the BBC News website that he expects huge crowds at John's performance

"A good crowd is normally around 40,000," he said.

"Tonight we expect about 60,000 people to come and see Elton John."

4. Coptic Christians
They are orthodox, and highly bigoted against many different groups. I lived among the largest Coptic population outside of Egypt, and they are nice, to a point, but their prejudices are very easy to read, and not limited to teh gay.
They don't deserve Elton, not at all. He's just the best, he's the pinnacle. Still getting the panties of prigs tied into knots after all these years.

3. why can't we just give the fundies a country of their very own.
Actually, I'm thinking an island of their very own - or maybe a planet. It has always puzzled me that fundies believe that their view should be the prevailing and only view, while more moderate and liberal people believe that an environment that encourages many views is healthier.

I am less charitable. A beautiful rose garden is a healthy place for many flowers, and also for weeds to grow unless we're willing to discourage certain weeds, such as fundamentalism, from taking root.

I'm glad that all lofty ideals aside, it seems that money is the root of this newly acquired "tolerance".

9. I believe Jesus was gay, too.
A 33 year old bachelor in sandals living at a time when having a wife and family was a near-requirement in society?

Do the math.

10. No Supreme Court nomination for him, then!
I always wondered why Moses gets his face on the Supreme Court building but not Jesus.
