Obama Urged To Protect Uncontacted Tribes
Saturday, 29 May 2010, 12:52 pm
Press Release: Survival International
Obama Urged To Protect Uncontacted Tribes From Oil Pipeline

President Obama has been urged to help protect Peru’s uncontacted tribes when he meets with Peruvian president Alan Garcia on 1 June.

Survival International has written to President Obama highlighting the threat posed to two of the world’s last uncontacted tribes by the construction of an oil pipeline in the remote Peruvian Amazon.

ConocoPhillips and Spanish-Argentine oil giant Repsol-YPF stand to benefit if the pipeline is built. Both companies are hoping to explore for oil in the region where the tribes live and would need the pipeline, due to be built by Anglo-French company Perenco, to help transport any oil from the rainforest to Peru’s Pacific Coast.

‘We urge you to appeal to President Garcia to stop the construction of the pipeline and prohibit companies like ConocoPhillips from working in this area, and indeed any area where there are ‘uncontacted’ tribes,’ reads Survival’s letter to President Obama. ‘Working in such areas is a blatant violation of the tribes’ rights under international law and the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and endangers the lives of some of the most vulnerable people on earth.’

10. Nope not a freeper..
just a realist. I had hope, bought the t-shirt and posters, put the sign on my front lawn and voted for the guy. Needless to say, and you have to agree with me to a certain extent, that he has been a disappointment so far.

As for your reason, lets be honest if he is willing to open up the East Coast to drilling I'm sure he wouldn't be opposed to the West Coast or better yet a country he has no interest in.

If this rig explosion in the Gulf didn't happen we would be on our way to drilin baby drillin as we speak! yeehaw!

11. Guess what? Obama is helping the thieves rob the store.
He is standing tall for weak, worthless legislation every step of the fucking way and then bragging about his wonderful successes.

13. It doesn't much matter where he stands
It's Congress. The Dems are pushing initiatives in forms they know they can pass them instead of wasting time on legislation that ends up filibustered or losing the vote. Yes, they are diluted versions of the originals but they also serve as placeholders upon which to expand. It's the only strategy that works against Republicans who threaten everything with a filibuster and oppose every progressive initiative, and it has resulted in healthcare and financial reform. We haven't had that kind of reform in a long time.

If Obama got to choose exactly how the reforms would be enacted I'm sure healthcare and financial regulation would look a lot different right now. At the least we'd have split banks up and had a public option.

14. Oh, please. Obama has a LOT of influence over Congress. And he has fought AGAINST populist

provisions in both the so-called "health care" "reform" bill and the so-called financial "reform" bill, not to mention never actively fighting FOR populist things he supposedly wanted.

Name one populist thing Obama put himself on the line for--went all out for publicly-- in either of those biils that Congress refused him. And, as soon as he OPPOSED populist things, like drug reimportation from Canada or breaking up "too big to fail" entities, Congress caved in to him. (Yes, he OPPOSED breaking them up. So much for your claim as to what those bills would have included if Obama had had his way. They won't be broken up bc he DID have his way.)

The totally unsupported myth/fantasy that this Democrat POTUS has no power over this Democratic Congress is too transparent for most on this board.

19. Not the kind of influence you (and I) wish he had
I know it seems like a cop out but look at the voting records. Better yet try to catch CSPAN and listen to what's going on on the floors of the House and Senate. Obama has about as much influence over Congressional Republicans as I do. Unfortunately we cannot pass laws with just the President and Democrats in Congress. They need Republican votes.

He fully supported the public option and said so, but had to concede to get the healthcare bill passed. Fighting for it would have done nothing except create the potential for the bill to be killed. It would have been a huge win for the right. Am I overjoyed about the watered down bill? No. But there are some good pieces of legislation in there that have gone or will go into effect very soon.

I know it's not what we expected but it's a foot in the door. Once this legislation shows success it will become easier to get things through and I fully expect Obama to push more and more progressive initiatives at that time. I just don't see a better strategy right now.
