BP Prepared for Spill 10 Times Gulf Disaster, Permit Plans Say
Source: Bloomberg

May 31 (Bloomberg) -- BP Plc said in permit applications for drilling in the Gulf of Mexico that it was prepared to handle an oil spill more than ten times larger than the one now spewing crude into the waters off the southern United States.

“Proper execution of the procedures detailed in this manual will help to limit environmental and ecological damage to sensitive areas as well as minimizing loss or damage to BP facilities in the event of a petroleum release,” the company said in its oil-spill response plan, filed with the U.S. Minerals Management Service in 2008.

<...>

The representations show that BP overestimated its ability to control an oil spill in waters where it’s the biggest player in a Gulf energy extraction industry worth $52 billion a year, said Bob Deans, a spokesman with the Natural Resources Defense Council in Washington.

“BP has obviously overpromised and underdelivered,” Deans said. “They told us they had a plan that could deal with the consequences of a worst-case scenario. They don’t.”

8. keyphrase "will help to limit". While the phrase could mean only
a small kill off (of the sea life in the Gulf), the phrase could also be interpreted as nearly anything short of a 100% kill off.

Perhaps regulators can sleep easy at night knowing the phrase they approved in the permit was not, "should help to limit".

10. And what is our federal government doing about the criminal negligence, false statements
and environmental terrorism BP is continuing to perpetrate on the United States. This damage caused by a foreign entity is an act of war on the people of the United States. The federal government needs to declare war on their rampant destruction.

14. That could get ugly...
During the Bush years, they actually went through the MMS and cleaned out the most corrupted elements (Don Howard). Republicans could turn that into a "What happened after we left?" argument.

If they close down offshore drilling, the jobs are going to go away and it will get turned into an "anti-business, anti-jobs" statement by the administration's enemies. They are already saying that drilling restrictions forced them to go into deep water in the first place, since the demand for oil is increasing, at the same time we want to reduce imports.

But mostly, it happened on Obama's watch, and while he is in no way responsible, the witch hunters will make sure he stays in the torchlight.

Sadly, you may be right, in that they don't see this as "big enough" yet.
