Thousands of Iraqis Protest Gaza Aid Ship Deaths
Source: REUTERS

(Reuters) - Thousands of followers of an anti-U.S. cleric took to the streets in Baghdad on Monday to protest the deaths of pro-Palestinian activists in Israel's storming of an aid Flotilla bound for Gaza.

The demonstrators, waving Iraqi and Palestinian flags and holding pictures of their leader Moqtada al-Sadr, chanted against Israel and its ally, the United States.

"We call on the international community to take responsibility for what is going on against our people in Palestine," Sadr said in a statement read out by one of his representatives, Sheikh Abdul Hadi al-Muhammadawi.

"This act that Israel committed today is an inhumane act. All countries, especially Arab countries, must take action beyond just media condemnation."

"We want to send a message to the Palestinians to let them know they are not alone and that the Iraqis are with them," said Iraqi Interior Minister Jawad Bolani. "What is going on is a vicious crime. The international community must condemn it and take responsible action against them. This is the stand of all Iraqis, officially and publically."

1. This is a really big story but I haven't seen anything yet on MSM this morning.
Remember when TV was the first to break big stories? Now it is the web....and DU especially.
I have to confess, though, I haven't been closely monotoring CNN or MSNBC, but I have been checking it out regularly. No breaking news.

4. I grew up with great sympathy for Israel. That is long gone.
Israel deserves to go the way of the Soviet Union.

8. I agree. Israel's democracy isn't working.
And it needs to be replaced with a religious driven leadership that has violent tendencies and won't be an ally to us in the region.

11. Didn't this already happen? A nation that defies all international laws and
and rules of engagement?

What part of "international waters" is so hard for them to understand?

5. Prssumably Israel regarded the attack on the Turkish
ship to be in Israel's best interests.

However, the attack definitely hurts the interests of the U.S.

The attack will cost American lives in Afghanistan because the Muslims in Afghanistan will be more united against the ally of Israel, namely us.

Plus the U.S. needs Turkey as an ally in the Middle East and this action has greatly harmed our relationship with Turkey.
