McDonald's recalls 12m Shrek glasses after toxic paint found in probe ordered following tip-off,

McDonald’s today recalled 12million Shrek-themed children’s drinking glasses across the U.S. because the painted designs contain a toxic metal.
Paint on the collectibles promoting the new movie Shrek Forever After was found tainted with cadmium after a congresswoman demanded an investigation.
Representative Jackie Speier, a Democrat from California, handed samples to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission following an ‘anonymous tip’.
.....
Cadmium, used to create reds and yellows in the paint, is a known cancer-causing agent that can also lead to bone softening and severe kidney problems.
Even though the levels of the metal involved are low, there was a long-term risk because children could easily rub off the substance and put unwashed hands in their mouths.
‘A very small amount of cadmium can come to the surface of the glass, and in order to be as protective as possible of children, CPSC and McDonald's worked together on this recall,’ said CPSC spokesman Scott Wolfson.
He would not specify the amounts of cadmium that leached from the paint in tests, but said the amounts were ‘slightly above the protective level currently being developed by the agency.’

Manufactured by ARC International of Millville, New Jersey, the glasses were to be sold from May 21 into June.
Roughly seven million of the glasses had been sold, while another approximately five million are in stores or have not yet been shipped.
ARC International are yet to respond to requests for comments.
