Kucinich calls for independent probe of Israeli raid

By Agence France-Presse
Friday, June 4th, 2010 -- 7:06 pm

The full text of the letter from Rep. Dennis Kucinich to President Obama follows the AFP story below

A US lawmaker called Friday for an independent probe into Israel's deadly raid on a Gaza-bound aid ship and called for Washington to impose diplomatic and financial "consequences" on its ally.

"The US can begin by calling for an independent international inquiry of the Mavi Marmara incident. The integrity of such inquiry necessitates that it not be led by the nation whose conduct is under scrutiny," Representative Dennis Kucinich said in a draft letter to President Barack Obama.

The message, which Kucinich was circulating to colleagues for their signature before sending it to the White House, urges Obama to "call Israel to an accounting for its conduct in planning and executing" the raid.

My guess is that it will never happen although it should!

1. If only more of our "owned" Congress had the courage to do the right thing.
I don't usually agree with Dennis on many things but he and former President Carter do have the courage of their convictions. Many more feel as they do but do not have the courage. Israel knows this and they count on the cowardice of our government officials.

15. No problem
Kucinich calls for an "independent" probe while condemning Israel at the same time.

"The State of Israel's conduct, attacking a Turkish ship in international waters, constitutes an act of belligerence against Turkey"

"In its violent commando raid on the Mavi Marmara, the government of Israel showed no concern as to how its conduct may affect the lives of defenseless, innocent people, its friends and allies, and in particular the United States"

Those are his words not mine. If he was a potential juror on this a judge would toss him out of the jury pool as biased.

Exactly what kind of an "independent" investigation is he planning on? I know. One of those great congressional hearings where congressmen bring in witnesses and then lecture them without giving them a chance to actually testify so they can produce sound bites for the evening news.

32. How about an 'independent'
investigation not run by Israel? I think this is a completely reasonable request. But in these days of 'not so independent, independent investigations' it might sound unreasonable to you.

23. My guess is that this will be as successful as all the other things Kucinich calls for.
There is a huge gap between reality as it is and the reality for which we fantasize. Or as the old proverb goes, if wishes were horses, beggars would ride.

28. Things are the way they are because we allow them to happen
If we were to vote for politicians that represented our core values, rather than the pretty pre-packaged empty suit we usually vote for, we would have a different reality altogether.

24. any (balanced) investigation should consider the differences
what is the difference between the below three cases?
1. There was killing on the Marmara.
2. Rachel Corrie was stopped. peacefully.
3. five of the other ships were stopped. peacefully.

in the cases of <2> and <3>, any criticism on Israel on stopping those boats is legitimate. (should be discussed still, yet legitimate no doubt). i.e., the activists on the Rachel Corrie shows how to protest rightfully in a way which can be backed.

the case of the Marmara ended with killing but was a whole different story.
the killings in Marmara is a direct responsibility of two factors:
1. deadly violent activists: deadly violence of (several dozens) deadly violent passengers (pretending to be peace activists, like most others on this boat)
2. wrong decision making by the israeli's and wrong assessment that the passengers are all peaceful activists.

waiting to hear the results of the investigation... as long as it is fair and balanced...

27. Um, the five other ships where not stopped "peacefully".
There was violence reported by passengers on other vessels, too. People did get hurt and there was damage to property. Thank god, no one got killed.

And, the IDF began the violence on those vessels and on the Marmara. The passengers did not.

How odd they won't do that and clear it all up.

I'd never expect it of someone spineless and corrupted like Barack Obama, but there are a few politicians with integrity out there. I'll be interested to see if anyone else dares to sign Kucinich's letter.

37. Barb Boxer wrote letter to support israel, now what?
I am in California and can't vote for any of the dem candidates when they support assassination of american or foreign aid workers! What is wrong with her, can anyone tell me why she would do this when her base does not support israel aid? I do not understand her, and there is no other dem candidate I can find. I also am having trouble finding anything negative about her signing the letter, just positive support and zionist murder and apartheid is unjustly criticized! I am more upset about this than the gulf spill. How can anyone justify slaughter and terrorism?

I do not refer to all israeli's, I realize there are many parties and I have never seen my jewish friends and relatives support isreals blindly.

Anyone know of another candidate who could win and a little help on understanding why Boxer would do this?!

51. It depends...
on who writes the History books. If it's the Texas school board, he'll be remembered as the elfin hippie who believes in aliens. If it's the conventional crew, he'll be remembered as an upstart ultra liberal ideologue who happens to be an ineffective legislator. If it's the "lefty" blogosphere he'll be remembered as the guy who was always right, except when he wasn't, but changed his mind.
