Official says several incidents occurred at the base

LAKEHURST, N.J. - Officials locked down the Naval Air Engineering Center in Lakehurst, N.J., on Monday, resulting in traffic being blocked from entering or leaving the base.

Media Relations Coordinator Senior Airman David Carbajal said there were several incidents they he could not provide any more information about.

Carbajal said no shots were fired on the center, which was where the airship Hindenberg exploded in 1937.

5. Raw Story is reporting some details

Latest: CBS News reports, "Officials lifted a lockdown that lasted a little more than two hours at a Naval air base in Lakehurst on Monday morning after a FedEx truck driver entering the base was found with a handgun."

Two separate incidents took place, CBS 2 learned. Sources said a FedEx driver was taken into custody at a commercial delivery gate after security found a 9 mm firearm in the truck. No shots were fired.

A second incident allegedly occurred at a non-commercial gate, though there's no word as to what happened at that gate.

6. Huh.
Weird. I could understand a NJ FedEx driver carrying a gun, but the second incident complicates things a bit.

7. The "second incident" might have just been a coincidence.
Say, some military truck driver looking for the bathroom wanders out of the secure area he's supposed to stay in while loading or unloading. It might never have been an "incident" if they weren't already on edge.

8. Huh?
Why would a "NJ FedEx driver" need to carry a gun?

I lived for almost 5 decades in NJ. Never felt a need to carry a gun.

and we often had 18 wheeler truckers as well as FEDEX and UPS drivers with unregistered firearms in their trucks (the delivery truck drivers also often had dope). we never locked down the post for these things.
