(Chicago Mayor) Daley urges Wal-Mart to raise minimum wage
Source: Chicago Sun-Times

Mayor Daley today urged Wal-Mart to sweeten the pot even further — by raising the company’s offer of an $8.75-an-hour minimum wage or increasing pay after one year on the job — to break the stalemate that has stalled its $1 billion plan to build “several dozen” Chicago stores.

One day after hailing Wal-Mart’s “urban minimum wage” as the highest of any Chicago area retailer, Daley got on the phone to Wal-Mart executives and urged them to raise the bar even higher.

The $8.75-an-hour minimum Chicago wage would be 50 cents above Illinois’ minimum wage, but far short of the $11.03-an-hour unions initially demanded. It’s 50 cents shy of the $9.25-an-hour compromise for which labor would have settled, sources said.

...

The mayor’s last-ditch plea comes amid frenzied lobbying to line up the eight votes needed to win Zoning Committee approval Thursday for a proposed Pullman Park Wal-Mart.

1. Less than $12 dollars an hour is a crime in Chicago. Chicago needs to raise its
Min wage for the city stat. This is an embarressment.

2. Yup. It needs to be set at $20/hour
Living wages, not minimum wages.

If Wal-Fart can't live with it, then fuck it.

And also fuck Daley. He's stale for mayor of Chicago. Too much corruption.

3. Living wages indeed
The rights of people to make a living, to exist in a society, far outweigh the right of Walmart to make even more profit for their board and shareholders (most of whom wouldn't know a day's work if it bit them in the ass).

Walmart's a great case study but even if they throw these crumbs at Chicago the fight is a much bigger one.

4. "WHAT!?!?! We don't have to pay more than 12 cents a day in China! Exrortion!
WalMart means never having to deal on a level playing field.

6. I saw an ad in the Chicago Defender,
it was talking about high unemployment, and chicago is destroying good jobs for the community. Further down, i saw it was Walmart, the nerve of some people. That issue also had an anti teachers union segment about keeping class sizes 35 and under.
