A six-member jury will decide whether an official of the controversial Westboro Baptist Church neglected her child and disturbed the peace during a protest in Bellevue two years ago.

Shirley Phelps-Roper appeared Wednesday in Sarpy County Court and asked that the charges be dismissed.

Douglas County Judge Joseph Caniglia, who is handling the case, denied Phelps-Roper’s motion to dismiss the misdemeanor charges. Jury trial was set for Aug. 23.

If convicted, she could face up to 15 months in jail.

3. If she goes to jail the family will probably make new signs saying god hates the judge.

4. i think it's people like this that are going to have a rude awakening at the pearly gates.
because they are the ones that aren't going to be allowed in. i believe it says right there in the bible something about judging others. i believe that is the book these jokers use to justify their hatred. just sayin.

5. They will have quite the company when rejected at the "Gates"
Fallwell and others of his ilk. Pat Robertson will join them eventually as well.

7. In photo # 1 she is walking on the flag
Tacky, but that is the least of this family's 'sins' against her fellow man. I'm not Christian but Jesus was maybe the (a) Buddha and would not appreciate this hate stuff.

10. Shorts and a tank top? Isn't she showing a bit too much skin for someone who
professes to believe in her bible so strongly?

13. I couldn't care less, but according to those who have such a strict interpretation of
the bible, it is hardly what one would call modest, and it does say something about that.

6. Child neglect
It is child neglect to have those children out on their protest lines. Protesting is very stressful. I saw a documentary where someone driving by the protesters threw out a drink container full of liquid and hit the young boy in the side of his face.

14. I hope she is judged by the same standard by which she judges
In fact, Jesus rather explicitly promised folks that's what would happen to them. "Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us."

15. Good news is Fred Phelps is really old and likely not long for this world
He'll die in the next decade hopefully. I haven't heard about anybody in the Phelps family that could hold the operation together once the old man dies. They are all basically in the thrall of the evil old man and once he is gone, they won't be able to stay united in their fear of him.
