MOSUL, Iraq, March 28 (Reuters) - Insurgents fired two rocket-propelled grenades at a U.S. military vehicle in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul on Sunday, setting it on fire, witnesses said.

2. Another Stryker...
According to the Reuters story, it was a Stryker APC:

From the same story

<snip>
More blasts shook the wheeled Stryker armoured vehicle, apparently as its ammunition exploded. There was no immediate word on casualties in the attack in the west of the city.
</snip>

This doesn't bode well for the occupants of the Stryker... :(

4. Kick!
Edited on Sun Mar-28-04 08:01 PM by jayfish
I was watching Faux this afternoon and they covered this story. They had video of the vehicle burning. It looked as if it had burned down to the frame. After the video ened the commentary was that the US said the vehicle was not destroyed? Talk about BS. Does this thing (Stryker) bring to realization all of the original concerns about the Bradley FV? I hope not, for the sake of our troops.

40. Almost like the Apache helo that crashed in the early days of...
the war for oil. The two pilots were captured (released) and the very much intact, upright and armed Apache was reportedly bombed by US planes a couple days later.

But some saw pics & video of the Apache being trucked through a city on a flatbed. The Apache crash landed in an open field.

So either the Apache was bombed inside a populated city (unlikely IMO) or they never bombed it at all (likely IMO.

10. Yeah this is what the "good guys" are up to.

I was with a US army unit when they went on a raid one morning. Tanks, armored personnel carriers and Humvees squeezed through the neighborhood walls as a CIA operator eyed the rooftops and windows of nearby houses angrily, a silencer on his assault weapon. Intelligence had intercepted a phone conversation in which a man called Ayoub spoke of advancing to the next level to obtain landmines and other weapons. Soldiers broke through Ayoub's door early in the morning, but when the sleepy man did not immediately respond to their orders he was shot with non-lethal ordnance, little pellets exploding like gun shot from the weapon's grenade launcher. The floor of the house was covered with his blood. He was dragged into a room and interrogated forcefully as his family was pushed back against their garden's fence.

Ayoub's frail mother, covered in a shawl, with traditional tribal tattoos marking her face, pleaded with the immense soldier to spare her son's life, protesting his innocence. She took the soldier's hand and kissed it repeatedly while on her knees. He pushed her to the grass along with Ayoub's four girls and two boys, all small, and his wife. They squatted barefoot, screaming, their eyes wide open in terror, clutching one another as soldiers emerged with bags full of documents, photo albums and two compact discs with Saddam Hussein and his cronies on the cover. These CDs, called The Crimes of Saddam, are common on every Iraqi street and, as their title suggests, they were not made by Saddam supporters. But the soldiers couldn't read Arabic and saw only the picture of Saddam, which was proof enough of guilt. Ayoub was brought out and pushed on to the truck. He gestured to his shrieking family to remain where they were. He was a gentle, avuncular man, small and round, balding and unshaven, with a hooked nose and slightly pockmarked face. It seemed unlikely that he was involved in any anti-American activity; but he did not protest and maintained his dignity, sitting frozen, staring numbly ahead. The soldiers ignored him, occasionally glancing down at their prisoner with sneering disdain. The medic looked at Ayoub's injured hand and chuckled to his friends, "It ain't my hand." The truck blasted country music on the way back to the base. Ayoub was thrown in the detainment center. After the operation there were smiles of relief among the soldiers, slaps on the back and thumbs up.

Several hours later a call was intercepted from another Ayoub. "Oh shit," said the unit's intelligence officer, "it was the wrong Ayoub." The innocent father of six who had the wrong name was not immediately let go so as not to risk revealing to the other Ayoub that the Americans were searching for him. The night after his arrest a relieved Ayoub could be seen escorted by soldiers to call his family and tell them he was fine, but would not be home for a few days. "It was not the wrong guy," said the units commander defensively, shifting blame elsewhere. "We raided the house we were supposed to and arrested the man we were told to." Meanwhile Army intelligence was still confounded by the meaning of the intercepted conversations until somebody realized it was not a terrorist intent on obtaining weapons. It was a kid playing video games and talking about them with his friend on the phone.

17. First off, that bit wasn't posted here
So there goes that argument.

Secondly, the quote you lifted out was spoken by an Iraqi in reference to American Troops. Taken in context it makes a lot of sense.

So stop trying to rustle up trouble when it isn't there.

You cite the entire site linked as Jew-Bashing because a reporter transcribed some of his experiences in Iraq, and he decided to include the anger and resentment of an Iraqi cabbie.

If you're that thin-skinned I suggest you look elsewhere.

13. This isn't "Good Guys v. Bad Guys". Rarely are things so simple.
Ambiguity runs deep right now and I think that's why the other poster responded like they did.

To many Iraqis the US troops are simply Imperialist Invaders/Occupiers and certainly not "Good Guys".

That doesn't mean that they are literally "Bad Guys" but because of the circumstances leading to the Invasion they are, in many eyes, acting illegally. To some barbarically (sp?).

Either way I hope they get those troops home where this sort of crap doesn't have to happen anymore. So they don't have to die for Bush.

29. You Are Being Nonsensical, Sir
Edited on Sun Mar-28-04 10:07 PM by The Magistrate
This is an attitude widely spread among Iraqis just now. It is indeed a foolish and bigoted attitude, but is sufficiently widespread among the Iraqi people to make it a serious factor in the resistance against U.S. occupation. People need to understand what the situation over there is, if they are to take any intelligent view of it, and concealing such an important element of the situation would be a disservice to all.

But many are not aware of how widespread this particular belief is among the people of Iraq just now. Do you feel that fact should be kept hidden, and that anyone who calls attention to it ought to be denounced?

33. Look, I don't think it should be a sin, just for saying "Jehovah."
You're only making it worse for yourself!

Making it worse? How can it be worse? Jehovah! Jehovah! Jehovah!

I'm warning you! If you say "Jehovah" one more time (gets hit with rock) RIGHT! Who did that? Come on, who did it?

She did! She did! (suddenly speaking as men) He! He did! He!

Was it you?

Yes.

Right...

Well you did say "Jehovah."

STOP IT! STOP IT! STOP IT RIGHT NOW! STOP IT! Alright, no one is to stone _anyone_ until I blow this whistle. Even... and I want to make this absolutely clear... even if they do say, "Jehovah."

26. The man was reporting what he overheard an Iraqi say.
He did not say that he agreed with it.

By recounting this incident, it just helps point out the no-win situation in which that dimwitted, uninformed president of yours has placed the US GI's. Many Arabs and Muslims are distrustful of the US because they believe the US unduly supports Israeli interests and totally neglects Palestinian interests. There have been reports of US troops training in urban warfare tactics in Israel or training with Israeli instructors drawing on Israel's experience in keeping down insurrections in the Palestinian territories. They also believe, and I tend to agree with them here, that Israel probably played a significant role (how significant is probably open to debate) in encouraging the Slow Witted One to invade Iraq in the first place.

They are aware that Saddam was considered a threat by Israel and now there's been talk of piping Iraqi oil through a pipeline to Israel. Combine all this together alongside the traditional Arab mistrust and dislike for Israel and many Iraqis apparently see the US acting as surrogates or as agents for Jewish Israel.

That's the problem that your country will have to contend with and the story was just trying to make that point, not to convey that the author himself was anti-semitic. If Russia invaded the US with the encouragement of North Korea, totally destroyed the US defensive capabilities, and then stated they were going to ship US resources to North Korea, I imagine many Americans would call the North Koreans many worse things than "dirty North Koreans."

Iraqi resistance fighters kill civilians.

Both use propoganda and fear to obtain power.
