US pilots fly Pakistan flood aid to win hearts

For US combat pilots in Afghanistan, there are two reasons to visit Pakistan: to help provide aid to the millions affected by devastating floods, and to improve America's image.

The White House said that US helicopters have helped to save more than 1,000 lives in Pakistan. Washington has provided 35 million dollars in aid, including 436,000 halal meals and 12 pre-fabricated bridges.

"The primary focus of our mission is to provide food to people," Major Daniel Rice, commanding officer of the US aviation fleet in Pakistan, told AFP.

Asked whether it would help remove misunderstandings about the United States in Pakistan, he said: "I certainly hope so. We are learning from each other every day... We are talking about each other's families as we deal together with the calamity here," Rice added.

Pakistan flood relief: Could it undercut Taliban influence?
By Howard LaFranchi, Staff writer
CS Monitor

The US is widely disliked in Pakistan, feeding the Taliban and terrorism there. But if the US played a major role in Pakistan flood relief, it could win many hearts and minds, some experts say.

Article: http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Foreign-Policy/2010/0803/Pakistan-flood-relief-Could-it-undercut-Taliban-influence

Faux' Islamaphobic fearmongering is broadcast unfiltered 24/7 all over Pakistan and I strongly believe it plays a major part in the anti-American sentiment there that these articles discuss. Particularly now with all the Mosque fearmongering they are pumping out 24/7 which has led to http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x8901467">this sort of behavior.

I seriously think they are a danger to national security, but in different ways than most people think.

But this is something we need to do without thanks.

2. Any channel named Star is part of the Murdoch empire.....
That said, Star News isn't as bad as Fox News, and not as popular(atleast not in India). But like the actually Fox/Fox Sports etc, other Star channels are quite popular for soap operas and sports.

4. How about using that 35 million on our people? And our infrastructure?
Edited on Tue Aug-10-10 10:50 AM by earcandle
There are people devastated and starving here at home, and
our infrastructure and schools in need of repair.

I don't understand how we can give to other countries and
ignore our own problems. This is not the American way.

Take care of our own first.

8. If we were to shift all the resources we are putting into
the war in Afghanistan into this disaster, we would win the war, because we would over the people of both countries. Enough of them to make the bad guys irrelevant. Then we could start helping them rebuild their countries, instead of helping the bad guys tear them down.

Kucinich's Dept. of Peace idea would make this country so much safer and admired around the globe.

If this were a fairy tale, the 'king' would announce that his heart has been moved so much by seeing all this tragedy, that he has decided that from now on his country will only help people who need help, rather than fight wars and he is sending all the troops and equipment from the war to the flood victims.

But, I know, it's reality and it's brutal and we'll never give up our addiction to war until we finally grow up whenever that will be.

Meantime, I'm glad someone is thinking along those lines at least and I hope they do more.

I wondered what the U.S. would do, thanks again for the answer Turborama.
