WARSAW, Poland — A fire broke out overnight in one of barracks of the former Nazi death camp of Majdanek in Lublin, Poland, destroying more than half of the building and about 10,000 shoes of Holocaust prisoners, officials said.

The Majdanek museum said the fire broke out shortly before midnight on Monday. The cause of the fire is not yet known and the experts are investigating.

"A museum guard noticed smoke coming out of the former camp's kitchen," the museum said on its website. He immediately called firefighters and cut the camp's electricity.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the damage to the site was estimated at 1 million zlotys, or around $330,000.

Bush Gang proved that. How many empty pairs of shoes are there in Iraq and Afghanistan?

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A fire swept through a barrack at the former Nazi death camp of Majdanek, destroying more than half the building and possibly 10,000 shoes of Holocaust victims, officials said Tuesday.

In Israel, the director of the Yad Vashem museum, Avner Shalev expressed sorrow that the historic site and valuable artifacts had been damaged or destroyed.

5. The shoes are probably the most emotional part of remembering the Holocaust
When my sister visited the Holocaust Museum, she said that there wasn't a dry eye when they saw the shoes.

If this was arson, then the neo-nazis knew where to strike. Why they would even do that is a question I don't think anyone can answer though.

7. I really hope this wasn't vandalism.
I wouldn't be surprised to hear it was, but I hope it was just an accident.
