GENEVA — The World Health Organisation on Tuesday declared the swine flu pandemic over, more than a year after the new virus spread around the world, sparking panic and killing thousands before fizzling out.

"The world is no longer in phase six of the pandemic alert. We are now moving into the post-pandemic period," WHO Director General Margaret Chan said in a telephone news conference.

"The new H1N1 virus has largely run its course," she added, saying an international public health emergency "no longer applies."

The top phase of the WHO's six tier pandemic alert scale corresponds to a pandemic, or global spread of a disease.

... as immaterial in discussing the role of swine flu in the reality-based world. Pretty pathetic.

Back when the HIV/AIDS epidemic was in its ascendancy, we also had to fight against dooms-day scenarios and the multi-dimensional fallout that accompanied them. It would be nice if my former colleagues at CDC could protest more vehemently when diseases are used as weapons of mass distraction. However, they know where their bread is buttered and where sizable funding increases come from. Again, pretty pathetic. (Just ask Jim Curran.)

11. Well, at least this vaccine apparently didn't result in

1/3 of recipients contracting incurable Parkinson's like symptoms for the rest of their life like the first swine flu vaccine. And contrary to the claims of many self proclaimed experts here on DU, I didn't become the typhoid Mary of my neighborhood because of my refusal to get the vaccine. Where are those posters now...tempted to go back and review who they were just for fun..
