Louisiana Declares Emergency as Gulf Storm Builds
Source: Bloomberg

Aug. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Governor Bobby Jindal declared a state of emergency for Louisiana after a tropical depression in the Gulf of Mexico was forecast to strengthen into a bigger storm and slam into the southern state tomorrow.

The system sustained winds of 35 miles (55 kilometers) an hour and was 290 miles east-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River shortly before 7 a.m. Miami time, the National Hurricane Center said on its website. The depression was heading northwest at 10 mph and forecast to hit the coast late tomorrow as a tropical storm, with winds exceeding 38 mph.

Impact is likely to be near the state boundary between Louisiana and Mississippi, according to graphics on the hurricane center website. A tropical storm warning extended from Destin, Florida, to Intracoastal City, Louisiana. Officials said the system will hamper BP Plc's efforts in the Gulf of Mexico to clear up the worst oil slick in U.S. history.

"The forecast from the National Weather Service indicates that the coastal parishes of Louisiana will be subjected to tropical force conditions to such a degree that life and property will be placed in jeopardy," Jindal said yesterday in statement posted on the State of Louisiana website. He said the declaration was justified "given the threatened tropical storm conditions and complicating factors created by the oil spill."

1. an "oil slick?" Is that what we're calling it now?
That seems inaccurate, at best. It is something of far greater magnitude than a 'slick'.

2. Oil slick is a noun
You'd need an adjective to describe its magnitude.......big whatever.

3. 'slick' implies it's superficial
It is far more systemic and not isolated to the surface, ergo slick seems inaccurate.

4. Why doesn't he just build some "sand berms"?
They did such a good job keeping the oil out.

6. Of course he does, and pass off the costs to other states, not his. Didn't BP say this was all "our"
fault, for using oil in the first place?

7. Man, that place just can't catch a break.
It seems both Nature and Man conspire to destroy Louisiana. A sad state of affairs.

9. Jindal is a grandstanding idiot
Edited on Wed Aug-11-10 12:56 PM by starroute
This thing isn't even a tropical storm yet -- it's just a big ol' mess of thunderstorms that's projected to maybe become a minimal tropical storm right before it hits land.

That's something you might want to batten down the hatches for a bit -- but no way are 40 mph winds a threat to "life and property." And the chances of it being any stronger than that are extremely low.

Idiot.

10. The State Deserve what they Get
After allowing oil companies destroy not only their environment but their entire livelihoods. Not only that but these idiots actually want to continue offshore drilling? I say hopefully that storm develop into a a CAT 5 Hurricane and turn that state into a watery wasteland. It won't wash away the stupid in that state but at least it will wake their asses up.
