US heat wave just preview of future: study
Source: AFP

WASHINGTON — The US East Coast is sweltering in a record-hot summer but it could endure twice as many sweaty days by mid-century without action on climate change, an environmental group said Wednesday.

The US capital, Washington, is on track for 50 days in 2010 in which the mercury crosses 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 Celsius), a number that could rise as high as 100 by 2050, the National Wildlife Federation said in a study.

The group, which supports action against climate change, said that the number of hot days in 2050 could be kept to 55 if polluters reduce carbon emissions.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has calculated that global temperatures between January and June 2010 were the warmest on record since 1880 when reliable readings began.

17. Gop Logic...
It snowed last winter so therefore there is no such thing as global warming. We also hacked some emails and posted snippets out of context on various right wing jagoff blogs, which also proves global warming is a hoax.

/sarcasm off

12. Natural AC on high
This has been the coldest summer I've seen in 25 years. But I'd choose the fog here any day over the extremes everywhere else.

14. It's not just SF, California in general has been below normal this year.
The temps were in the upper 70's and low 80's in the Central Valley yesterday, which is a good 10 degrees below average and nearly 20 degrees below a typical August day. We've only had four 100+ degree days this summer, and we normally average 15. Most of the forecasters are calling this the mildest summer in 20 years.

I was in Santa Monica with my daughter last month, and it was cold enough that she had to wear a sweater in the morning. I recall the dancing weatherbunny saying something about the 18th straight day of below normal temperatures.

6. Muahahahaha...
then you'll all know what it's like to live in Oklahoma. It's been hotter than Hades this summer. And it hasn't rained at my house since July 4 (and prior to July 4, we'd had torrential rains for days and days).
Actually, this is really terrible news.

7. Its a good thing
that by that time, I'll be dead, I can't stand the heat and humidity here. I plan on spending my retirement summers in Washington State, where the weather should remain mild for the next century, at least.

Sure you're ok with that?

10. When did I say that I had a problem with people who are fighting global warming?
I just can't seem to get used to the heat and humidity around here. This is my 4th summer here, and I have no idea why people in high starched collars would have even moved here a few hundred years ago.

11. Humidity is the worst.
Triple digits really are not too bad when in the low 100's but 110+, especially with humidity is horrible. There really is something to that cliché about dry heat. :D

18. Yep, experienced it in Arizona
and its way more bearable than the humidity here. Some days, it feels like you're walking through a cup of tea!

16. Nonsense...
gloom - in a word - is GOOD! Fog is like a fine skin conditioner. 60 F is warm.

The fishing's good, too.

Hmmmm....Maybe that fishing thing outweighs the other stuff.

Never mind.

19. Ha!
I get back to Western Washington twice a year, there's still plenty of room, even if I have to live in Bucoda!

I spent 37 beautiful years in WA, I so very much look forward to finding a place on the nearly uninhabited western coast, probably in Moclips or parts north of there.

Had it with the weather here - it's the worst. I can feel those Lake Michigan breezes even now. . .
