Lesbian cadet quits West Point, cites 'don't ask'
Source: Associated Press

WEST POINT — A lesbian cadet has asked to resign from the U.S. Military Academy because she can no longer lie about her sexuality and was troubled by the anti-gay attitudes of some around her.

Katherine Miller also wants to fight for repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" law, a subject she was studying and writing about as a sociology major at West Point.

22. Saw this on Rachel - outstanding interview - US is ridding itself of fine young military leaders
like Katie Miller et al, just because they're gay. It is un-American, it's prejudice and it's anti-civil rights.

16. No I don't think that's it
I think that when the true cost $$$ and loss comes out and what the military is losing the military will have no choice. I think that there are high ranking military folks who are gay...what happens when they all start coming out?

I think the Prop 8 issue working it's way through the courts is what he is waiting for. If he just does the signature thing it could be overturned the next time a Repug gets into office. If the courts rule Prop 8 is illegal then the DOJ has no choice but to enforce the law.

6. A stupid policy creates yet another victim.
Because we certainly can afford to lose talented future officers, and Arab linguists. Not like we actually *need* those in the War on Terra(tm), amirite???

7. Good - the last thing we need from West Point is Sociology Majors.
Edited on Thu Aug-12-10 06:44 PM by 24601
USMA was founded as our nations 1st engineering school. They need to leave the soft courses to civilian schools and get back to basics. BTW, who gives a fu*K about who she sleeps with - leaving was her decision - she could have stayed under the law Bill Clinton signed had she not told. The vast majority of cadets, straight or gay or by, don't reveal their orientation.

Edited for typo

21. I like her field just fine - but disagree that USMA should include
it as a major - they don't have education majors for example. It also is in no way a violation of civilian or military law to "tell" and reveal your orientation. You always have a lawful option to tell or not. What is not lawful in the military regardless about DADT is any act of sodomy as defined by Article 125 of the UCMJ. http://usmilitary.about.com/od/punitivearticles/a/mcm125.htm So repealing DADT without congress also changing the UCMJ is meaningless because you can be gay, you just can't act on it.

10. I'll just address the heading.
With a "hearts and minds" campaign such as we are waging in Iraq and Afghanistan, the thing we do need are Sociology Majors. How else are you going to design tactics to obtain acceptance and solutions in these conflicts?

13. Disagree
Father was one of the first Green Berets. His "boy scout" mission was living in the mountains of Vietnam. He was a Math and Theology major at Tuskeegee Institute in the late 1950's. Math helps with strategic blowing up of individuals, buildings, communities - Theology helped to open his heart to the people (wearing loin cloths) he was training to kill the V.C.

15. If you don't like USMA offering sociology as a major, you best take that up with
them directly and quit whining about it here on DU.

And you misspelled that very challenging abbreviation for bisexual, "bi". It's not "by".

20. From the OP that is why she is doing it now. No commitment
is required until this year. It would appear that she HAS learned a bit about the military.
