Columnist, wordsmith James Kilpatrick dies at 89
Source: AP via Yahoo

WASHINGTON – James J. Kilpatrick, who rose from cub reporter to become one of the South's most prominent newspaper editors and the nation's most widely syndicated political columnist, has died. He was 89.

Kilpatrick's wife, Marianne Means, said he died Sunday night at George Washington University Hospital. Means said he was being treated for congestive heart failure.

TV watchers in the 1970s knew Kilpatrick as the conservative half of the "Point-Counterpoint" segment of the CBS "60 Minutes." His sparring with liberal commentator Shana Alexander was famously parodied on "Saturday Night Live."

Means, also a former journalist, described him as "a great family man" and a cultural icon of his era.

4. I remember him well
Jack Kilpatrick, along with Helen Thomas, was one of the DC journalists who showed up early at my father's
memorial gathering at the National Press Club in Washington. My father and he disagreed on almost everything,
but respected each other's views, and Kilpatrick didn't hesitate to show up alongside Helen and honor my dad.
Knowing Kilpatrick's views, we really appreciated it.

RIP.

5. You must have had an interesting childhood
..and you must have met and known some really fascinating people.

Kilpatrick is among the last of an almost extinct breed in Washington, and he will be missed.

8. I didn't realize it at the time
For me, it was just normal hanging out with my dad's friends and colleagues and their kids.

How was I to know, at age 5 or 10, to what extent the world revolved around these people?
