LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Radio talk show host Dr. Laura Schlessinger has announced that she is ending her show and will not renew her contract at the end of the year. Schlessinger made the announcement Tuesday afternoon on "Larry King Live," saying she wants to "regain my First Amendment rights."

"I want to be able to say what's on my mind and in my heart and what I think is helpful and useful without somebody getting angry, some special interest group deciding this is the time to silence a voice of dissent and attack affiliates, attack sponsors. I'm sort of done with that," she said to Larry King.

She said she is not retiring, but has decided not to do radio anymore. She said she will continue to write books and publish articles on the Internet, as well as maintain her speaking engagements. "I'm not retiring, I'm not quitting, I feel energized actually," she said. "Stronger and freer to say the things that I believe need to be said for people in this country."

Schlessinger came under fire last week for using the N-word during her radio talk show.

In the midst of the controversy regarding her use of the N-word, Dr. Laura Schlessinger stopped by "Larry King Live" to very publicly quit her job in talk radio on August 17.

Schlessinger has faced criticism this week after using the racial slur repeatedly when a black caller asked for advice about how to deal with her husband's racist acquaintances. (Listen to the call below, but be warned that the audio includes rough language... obviously.)

Did Deryk Schlessinger - the soldier son of syndicated talk show host Dr. Laura who’s currently serving in Afghanistan - post images of rape, murder, torture, and child molestation on his MySpace page?

The official answer to that question is an unequivocal “maybe” - the Army will only confirm that the investigation is complete, but will not discuss whether Schlessinger was at fault or whether he was reprimanded. All that Lt. Col. David Accetta, the Army’s spokesman in Afghanistan, could offer via email from his post in Bagram was, “The investigation is complete and the unit commander took appropriate action based on the results. Any disciplinary action taken is not publicly releasable nor are the specific allegations or investigation results.” Accetta said he could not discuss more because he was obligated to protect Schlessinger’s privacy.

It seems the final chapter has an open ending in the Deryk Schlessinger saga, which began last May when Salt Lake Tribune reporter Matthew LaPlante discovered that the son of Santa Barbara resident Laura Schlessinger, a.k.a. Dr. Laura, was the subject of a military investigation. Tipped off by a former schoolmate of the soldier’s, LaPlante reported that Deryk Schlessinger’s MySpace page was awash in objectionable material, from the aforementioned images to written entries such as “I LOVE MY JOB, it takes everything reckless and deviant and heathenistic and just overall bad about me and hyper focuses these traits into my job of running around this horrid place doing nasty things to people that deserve it … and some that don’t.”

I've heard Flavor Flav use longer chains of the "N-word" than that, and he was making a damn good point about the use of that word.

I'm actually more offended by Dr. Laura's assertion that it's generally acceptable to think that all black Americans feel the same way about various issues.

It would be different if the family member were to ask "What do you Senegalese think about this?" or "How do you think your fellow Kenyans feel about this?" as long as he was discussing issues about, for example, Senegal or Kenya. But to just assume that all African-Americans make up some collective hive-mind amorphous mass that only thinks what it's told to think by some shadowy cabal is more of an insult to African-Americans than simply repeating "nigger" three times.

I have a particular pet peeve, being a law school graduate. When a private party interferes with your ability to speak freely, it is NOT a First Amendment issue. The First Amendment law can only be enforced against the GOVERNMENT. The offender must be a GOVERNMENT actor. For many years, Schlessinger has been making vicious and hateful comments about many groups. Gays and Lesbians are (in her words) "biological errors." Feminists are all "I don't know what kind of women" (direct quote). Rape victims who want an abortion are "sucking their baby into a sink." Women who work are "NOT their kids' moms" and don't care about the welfare of their children.



So why did it take the N-word to get her off the air?



Gays, lesbians and women in general can be trashed at will for 30 years by a seriously disturbed talk show host with documented abuses as a marriage and family therapist.* But one incident of the N-word sends her packing? As destructive as I think this woman has been over the years, it concerns me that all of her anti-gay and misogynist remarks made barely a dent in her career success, but ONE incident mentioning the N-word destroyed it.



To take this chastisement of Laura Schlessinger seriously, her inflammatory, hateful and bigoted remarks about gays and women should have been taken seriously. They were not. Therefore, I see no reason for her to leave radio. Hate is hate. Hate speech against one group should not be singled out over others.
