Gingrich went too far, says Buchanan
Posted: August 17th, 2010 04:27 PM ET

(CNN) – Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich's latest comments regarding the controversial Islamic center near the site of the 9/11 World Trade Center attack are being called "absurd" - from no less a conservative stalwart than Pat Buchanan.

Speaking on MSNBC on Tuesday, the former presidential candidate and conservative commentator said recent comments from Gingrich likening the proposed project to the hanging of a Nazi symbol outside the Holocaust Museum were merely part of the former Speaker's efforts to appear more controversial than Sarah Palin.

"Newt is a political opportunist," Buchanan said. "What Newt is doing is he's trying to get out and be more flamboyant and more charismatic, if you will, and more controversial than Sarah Palin, who is his primary challenger, if he gets into Iowa and New Hampshire. She will take all his oxygen and a lot of his support."

Both Palin, the former vice presidential nominee, and Gingrich are thought to be among the leading Republicans considering a presidential bid next year.

12. Buchanan is also opposed to the Iraq War.
As a paleoconservative he's generally anti-intervention and anti-free trade, which are also left-wing traits. However, don't try to read his opinions on immigration and race. Just don't.

I can respect that a little more than the greasy opportunism of most of the GOP these days.

38. I disagree. IMO, he's as dishonest as any other Repugnant shill.
Edited on Wed Aug-18-10 04:46 PM by No Elephants
He wrote speeches for Spiro Agnew, for God's sake. ("Nattering nabobs of negativity" was his handiwork--and, even today, he can't keep a straight face if someone mentions it. In fact, he often has a hard time keeping a straight face when spewing his justification of all things Republican and his condemnation of all things Democratic.)

He's a typical disingenuous income bracket Republican, with an equally typical side of bigotry. And he and Morning Jerk, another blatantly dishonest turd, stroke each other almost daily on MSNBC. Ugh.

42. US Constitution shamefully used for political expediency
The mosque should be a non-issue. Instead some politicians are recklessly using it and the US Constitution for political gain.

As an anti-war, anti-corporationist, anti-free trade, I find myself agreeing with PB more than some Democrats and especially the former Democratic candidate for VP. Buchanan was against free trade, Iraq War, international corporations run amok, neocons, spending gone wild under Bush, Constitutional abuses of Patriot Act and many issues that have ultimately not been good for Americans.

I'll predict now that the USA will see some major political realignments and alliances that would be un-heard of 10 years ago.

Buchanan's function is to keep the Puke Sheeple from straying from the fold.
All that NAZI rhetoric can put off the few remaining educated republicans.
So he'll repeat his standard election year act.
He will appear to be almost rational until the night before the election.
Then he'll tell his followers that they have to vote for the fascist anyway.
He does it every time.

But I don't think she would survive the Republican primary process. When she is attacked, the mean girl comes out. That's all well and good when it's pointed toward Obama and the Democrats, but what does it do to the GOP when it's directed at other potential candidates?
