Toronto bans kite flying in city park
Source: CBC News

Toronto took the extraordinary step on Tuesday of banning kite flying in a city park.

Some kite flying enthusiasts are advocates of kite fighting — where two kites do aerial battle, trying to cut the string of their opponent.

The problem is the kite string — which in many cases is as strong as fishing line — can get caught in trees or left on the ground, where birds and other small animals can get wrapped up in it.

This is in the Milliken Park in Toronto, and the ban applies only to this park and not city-wide.

4. What happened to real good fights?
If they had not banned real public fights, people would not resort to kite fighting.

I support legalizing public fighting.

5. This kind of shit is partially why I left North America
Get a fucking grip. You can maybe ban kite fighting, hand out fines to people who leave string around....etc. But banning it outright? Seriosuly, we are so fucking bored in North America that we lessen the amount of thing you can do to kill time.

Also, this shows Toronto city hall is lazy as fuck.

7. have you ever seen a bird caught in string, already dead, he doesn't know he's dead?
Edited on Tue Aug-17-10 10:01 PM by pitohui
until you have been there you prob. think this is just a joke to raise money

the courage of the animal, the calm expectation in his face when he looks you in the eye

he doesn't know he's dead, he thinks he has a future, he knows you are powerful and you understand why this happened and he thinks you can reach out and fix it

see my other post...there is a divide here between those who know why the law exists and those who think it funny

once you destroy someone's body w/. mono filament wire it's destroyed forever

15. if you say so
Edited on Tue Aug-17-10 10:20 PM by pitohui
i've never known of "awareness" of monofilament lead to you know, awareness, but maybe it's diff in toronto

i'm puzzled how they could fine people w./out a law, we both know no one's ever going to jail over this, and prob. no one will ever be fined

they'll just be told "knock it off"

can't see what you're cranky abt here?

shit, i should take my own advice, until you've looked the bird in the eye that you're killing w. monofilament you don't know, you can't know, you think it's a joke, there's no point arguing

17. I'm cranky because I'm honestly sick and tired of everything being banned
It is just ridiculous. I don't know if the USA is as bad as Canada, but in Canada it seems like ANYTHING that could slightly annoy anyone in your vicinity is banned. Obviously, this is a more serious issue, but I still think that it seems like "ban it" is the constant go-to of Canadian municipalities. And they DO enforce them here, they are under bylaws. A bylaw enforcer could hand you a fine. I used to work for the city and we had someone who's job it was to go around looking for infractions to fine.

Shit, you can't even put a friggin' bird feeder on a tree in some places now cause it attracts bears. SO FUCKING WHAT?! IN one city you aren't allowed to have BBQs because people complained of the smoke from cooking. It's just gone too far.

6. who if i cried out would hear me among the angelic orders?
having seen a bird trapped hopelessly in kite string, i'm glad to know someone has a heart, someone gives a damn...

rilke:
Who, if I cried out, would hear me among the Angelic

Orders? And even if one were to suddenly

take me to its heart, I would vanish into its

stronger existence. For beauty is nothing but

the beginning of terror, that we are still able to bear,

and we revere it so, because it calmly disdains

to destroy us. Every Angel is terror.

i have witnessed what rilke describes but don't know how to put it in words, you've seen it or you haven;t

those who have seen it know and it's like we say "remember that day we saw..." and those who don't know...it's a ravine, you can't cross it

this law will seem silly to the mass but if you've crossed the ravine you know it ain't

10. example no. primo
you don't yawn when you see courage in suffering, when you see an animal whose body has already been destroyed by monofilament but he's calm, he's looking at you, you as a human being are a little god and YOU CAN FIX THIS, right?

if you are bored by this, you have no heart

i;m gonna assume most DUers have a heart...those who are bored have no experience...

20. Do you want me to say, "Oh, go fly a kite?" I mean, it's kite-flying, for kites sake.
Edited on Wed Aug-18-10 03:11 PM by valerief

Anyone who gets pissed because they can't fly a kite in one park really should just toss in their towel.

9. Is this the hottest legal theme news story in Canada these days?
Edited on Tue Aug-17-10 10:05 PM by Arrowhead2k1

If this is the worst thing that happens up there then.... try living in the states? Some homeless guy just got released from prison after serving 12 years of a 25 year sentence for, wait for it...... stealing food because he was starving in 1997!

13. No, we're actually dealing with boatloads of Tamil refugees
And trying to decide how to deal with them. That or Vancouver's drug and gun problem, or maybe trying to get justice for the victims of serial killer Robert Pickton.
