Rocker Ted Nugent pleads no contest to California deer hunting violations

Rock star Ted Nugent, a 1970s guitar hero for hits including "Cat Scratch Fever," has recently created a successful second career as an advocate for hunting and outdoor ethics.

His television show, "Spirit of the Wild," is a four-time "Golden Moose" award winner on the Outdoor Channel. He has used his celebrity status to help promote better pay and working conditions for California game wardens, and consistently rails against poachers and other wildlife criminals.

So it was with a double take of disbelief that two California game wardens sat down in February to watch the show, and witnessed Nugent allegedly violate several California hunting laws.

The Feb. 9 episode showed Nugent killing a young male deer with bow and arrow near the El Dorado County town of Somerset.

I got him an autographed copy of Ted's book, "Kill It and Grill It," on a lark, one year when Teddy came through Tulsa on the D-List musician tour. (I hurt myself not laughing in his face when he talked to me) Anyway, I gave it to him when I saw him next (we live in two different states), and he thanked me profusely. I figured he would like it since he and Ted are both conservative, but my brother-in-law is at least rational when you talk to him. He really didn't know anything about Ted since he prefers country music.

Anyway, after a month, I was back visiting, and I asked how he liked it, and he sighed and said, "Jamie... (my name is James; he still calls me Jamie) I don't want to appear ungrateful but at first I thought it was some stupid drug humor that I wasn't getting until I saw him on television, and he really is THAT dumb! The recipes by his wife look good though."
