NLRB judge rules against Times Union (“engaged in certain unfair labor practices” must rehire 11)

by Richard A. D'Errico

A judge has ruled in favor of the union representing Times Union’s reporters and ordered the newspaper to rehire 11 laid off employees.

Administrative Law Judge Mark Carissimi, in his decision released today, said the Albany newspaper “engaged in certain unfair labor practices” and must rehire the staffers who were laid off in July 2009 to their original or similar positions.

A call to Times Union Publisher George Hearst was not immediately returned. The paper has 14 days to appeal to the National Labor Relations Board in Washington, D.C.

Carissimi said the region’s largest newspaper, based in Albany, violated the law by placing laid off workers on paid leave without giving the union, The Newspaper Guild of Albany, “timely notice and an opportunity to bargain.”

1. Unfortunate headline
I recognize after reading that "Times Union" is a business entity, but before clicking on the thread, I thought the judge ruled against a union representing staff on the NY Times (or some other paper called the Times).

I don't know how long the editing window is open, but the headline might be a subject of clarification.

Solidarity.

2. Good point

I knew from previous stories what was going on. I didn't think about those not following the story. Yep, time to edit expired.
