Former U.S. Open champ John McEnroe says women tennis players can't handle the same schedule as men
Source: NY Daily News

Look who opened his mouth again.

Three-time U.S. Open champion John McEnroe said Thursday that he doesn't believe women tennis players are mentally and physically strong enough to handle the Women's Tennis Association's schedule and it should be trimmed in size.

McEnroe, who's known for making controversial statements, made the comments on a CBS Sports conference call about their coverage of the U.S. Open, which starts Monday in Flushing.

"They should be required to be in less events, there should be less events for the women," McEnroe said. "It seems it takes an actual meltdown on the court or women quitting the game altogether before they realize there's a need to change the schedule."

-----

Not surprisingly, McEnroe's comments did not sit well with female authorities in the sport.

Jackass! Tell that to the Williams sisters.

1. Mac is a very insightful announcer in tennis.....
but he's wrong here. Players should choose how much they want to play. Btw, the Williams sisters play a very curtailed schedule, and Serena is out of the Open due to injury.

2. The Williams sisters actually don't play as often
A lot of the rest of the field does.

And his arguments for BOTH sexes by others.

3. They all - male and female - are overpaid prima donnas who do not contribute much to society.
The proliferation of tournaments (how many actually run at the same time?) gives all players the opportunity to take as much time off as they need and still make a fortune playing a game.

McEnroe is wrong on this. As well as being sexist in this instance.

4. Too bad John doesn't experience the calming effect of a menstrual cycle.
If he did, every 28 days for at least a few hours he might be tolerable.

5. Oh, it's "FEWER events", Moron McEnroe.
Geez.

This whole "men are superior to women" BS gets destroyed by mindless misogyny doesn't it?

My guess is that she would rip him a new one.

8. Bobby Riggs got himself back in the spotlight by making sexist comments too
One of the women stars needs to volunteer to beat his ass on the court like Billie Jean King did to Riggs in 1973.

13. Riggs humiliated the number 1 female at the time
in a match before King. If Riggs wasn't 55 at the time of the match, I'm sure it would have been a different result. McEnroe's 51 now. If there's a 40+ year old female tennis star who wants to do it, fine, but the whole "male vs. female only when the female is 25 years younger" set up was a joke in '73 and it's unnecessary now.

Secondly, since when did you become an expert on women's strength?

This is such smug nonsense.

18. how RW "He'd do so much better to keep his mouth shut. Permanently."
the mentality that people shouldn't be able to so much as speak.

He has a right to speak and make a fool of himself regardless of your opinion that people should be shut up forever if you don't agree with them.

seem to be hounded by injury than women.

19. It's already done in the major tournaments
Women's matches are won by winning two sets. Men's matches are won by winning three sets. So there's already a big difference.

Women are more likely than men to play in both the singles tournament and one or two doubles tournaments. And this is their choice, of course, possibly because of the "easier" singles matches. Men in the singles tournament are unlikely to play in doubles.

I think McEnroe just likes to rattle cages.

:hi:

20. That's what I was thinking. Women don't have those grueling 5 set matches like the men do.
And one of the majors doesn't have tie breakers. I think maybe it's Wimbledon.

21. yeah john... wearing that corset and long dress makes it hard to
get around on the court, maybe we should move the sidelines in about 5 feet and shorten the court too... But then, your mouth is big enough to be heard all the way to the top of the stadium. :sarcasm:
