A Seattle man has been charged with malicious harassment after police say he punched a man in a turban and accused him of being a member of al-Qaida.

Brock Stainbrook, 35, was charged late last week with malicious harassment -- the state's hate crime statute -- and fourth-degree assault. Stainbrook is being held at the King County Jail on $150,000 bail.

According to court charging documents, a fight broke out inside the 7-Eleven store at 362 Denny Way just after 12:30 a.m. Aug. 24 when Stainbrook threw change at a stranger and punched him in the head.Stainbrook was heard telling the man "you're not even an American, you're al-Qaida. Go back to your country," charging paperwork said.

King County Deputy Prosecutor Samantha Kanner said that Stainbrook has prior convictions in Washington for fourth-degree assault and criminal trespassing. He was convicted in Hawaii in 2002 and 2004 for making terrorist threats,

3. Turban equals Al Qaeda.
The man was probably Hindu.

I would like to personally apologize for the behavior of all the knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing, nationalistic morons who feel the need to destroy anything unfamiliar and threatening to their limited intellects.

Funny you should mention that...

This incident always stuck with me because in Canada, Sikhs are much more visible than Muslims. It's a double shame because 1) SIkhs, while proud of their warrior tradition, are essentially a peaceful religious group, and 2) they have suffered religious persecution in India.

20. Wow.. The Irony!
Most likely the man was a Sikh, funny enough Sikhism was created to protect hinduism from Islam. When the islamic empire turned on invading India the Ksatriyas(warrior caste of hindus) formed a military group known as the Sikhs to protect hinduism.
Keep in mind though that the caste system has nothing to do with religion.

Anyhow, if the guy ever read a book in his life he would have not attacked the Sikh.

My main point is I always notice that racism ALWAYS stems from ignorance.
It actually can be quite fascinating to watch.
