A 28-year-old woman severely burned when a stranger threw an acid-like liquid in her face was listed in serious condition in a Oregon hospital. Bethany Storro, of Vancouver, Wash., was getting something out of her car in downtown Vancouver when the attack happened Monday evening, her mother Nancy Neuwelt told The Oregonian.

Neuwelt said a young woman walked up to her daughter, said: "Hey pretty girl, do you want to drink this?" and tossed a cup of liquid in Storro's face. "I’m a nice girl and I don’t know why this happened," Storro, 28, said Tuesday in her hospital room in the Oregon Burn Center at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland, The Columbian newspaper reported.

Storro said the pain was the most excruciating she had ever experienced, her mother told The Columbian. "It was burning through her shirt. She took off her shirt and she was trying to wipe her face," Neuwelt said, according to the newspaper.

Storro "kind of remembers walking in circles," Neuwelt added. "She felt like her heart stopped at one point." he collapsed, screaming for help, only to realize she was not being heard. She got back up and stumbled toward a group of people, The Oregonian reported.

24. The news has been really getting to me lately, too.

Yesterday I just felt so sick at heart, for lots of reasons. We've had several deaths at work recently (family members of employees and others), and I found out sad news about a friend as well. By the end of the day I just wanted to curl up in a ball and hide.

If you're an adult, you have to want to go to a program. I have a friend with a schizophrenic adult son and he is refusing medications and attendance in voluntary mental health programs so he's at home and making their lives miserable. Yet they won't make him leave home (they're afraid he'll be homeless on the street) & he won't get help for himself.

One time my friend admitted him to the psychiatric wing of a hospital but he was coherent so they released him and said there is nothing they could do.

He's punched holes in their walls, stolen stuff, taken their car in the middle of the night and does not want to see their friends or even hear my friends talk on the phone. He's up all night and sleeps all day and my friends are afraid to leave him alone for fear he'll kill himself.

I'm more worried about him killing my friends. :scared: This boy needs professional help but it seems there's nothing the parents can do because he's a major, not a minor.

This person needs to spend as many years as modern medicine can keep them alive tucked away from contact with any other humans. Not allowed to read anything, watch anything or hear another human voice ever. Let them go crazy on the thoughts of what it is they are being punished for. Its too easy to find jesus or whatever your perferred religion is and be looking forward to death to allow a death penality. IMHO
Not a cut on religion here just saying it is too easy for some to find forgiveness from the one who does not exist in our physical world.

Its not a normal thing to do, even if you happen to be momentarily pissed at someone.

It is hard to make anything of it. I was just up a few blocks from there. It seems odd, bizarre. In an odd way, perhaps I should be grateful that neither I nor anyone I know in that area qualify as "pretty"? I dunno.

A racially-motivated hate crime? This feels more like a woman scorned-motivated rage crime--an assailant who was "thrown over" for someone either lighter or prettier.

It can be argued within reason that throwing acid in a person's face was an attempt to kill. Whether the attacker is sane or not is another question.

And heard of a similar event that had just happened. This would have put it Jan or Feb of 1983. I never heard if the crime had been solved. My crazy thought is that could this be generational revenge, some sort of feud? Stranger things have happened.

They talked about how easy acid is to get, how the attacks wreck a human life but very little is done to the attackers (in Asia) because it isn't really murder.

The Taliban and fellow extremists have frequently resorted to throwing acid in women's faces for even small transgressions, such as daring to go out unveiled. But there are concerns that such attacks may also be on the increase in the UK.

Hospital admission figures for the past three years show a steady rise in the number of people being treated for acid attacks. According to the NHS information centre, 44 people were admitted to hospital in 2006-07 after they were "assaulted with a corrosive substance". The following year the figure jumped to 67 and last year there were 69 admissions.

Acid Survivors Trust International, a charity which specialises in helping victims of acid attacks in places like Bangladesh and Pakistan, recently began work on a project documenting such attacks in Britain. It is the first serious attempt to map where acid assaults take place and what motivates their British perpetrators.

The doctor of a 28-year-old Vancouver woman who was severely burned Monday night by a stranger who doused her with acid, will perform surgery on her face this afternoon.

Dr. Nick Eshraghi, a burn surgeon for the Oregon Burn Center at Legacy Emanuel Hospital, said that during the approximately 90-minute surgery he will attempt to remove as much damaged skin from Bethany Storro’s face, without doing any further damage.

Storro's condition was upgraded from serious to fair today, hospital officials said.
