Environmental Militant Killed by Police at Discovery Channel Headquarters
Source: ABC

A radical enviornmentalist who took three hostages at the Discovery Channel headquarters while wearing what police may be explosives was shot and killed by officers, police said.

The gunman, identified as James Lee, was killed by police following four hours of negotiations but the hostages are all safe, said Montgomery County Police Chief J. Thomas Manger.

Manger said the suspect had "metalic canisters" strapped to his chest and back. When Lee was struck by police bullets, one of the canisters "popped." Police have not confirmed if the canisters were a bomb, but Manger said the "device may have gone off" when he was shot.

1. "Environmental Militant"???
Much of his manifesto rants against immigrants. I don't know many racist environmentalists. Nice spin - the guy was not an environmentalist, he was a wacko.

20. "Environmentalist" and "racist" are not mutually exclusive.
I don't know how it is now, but the Sierra Club was vehemently anti-immigrant a few years ago. I cut all ties with them, then.

39. Funny, I've known LOTS of environmentalists who oppose immigration
Population growth is the single greatest threat to environmental stability in the United States, and a sizeable portion of your "serious" environmentalists oppose immigration and support limits on births.

FAIR, one of the leading anti-immigration groups in the U.S., was created by a former Sierra Club chairman and a prominent ZPG activist. In 1988, the Sierra Club itself endorsed the idea that immigration should be limited to stabilize the U.S. population, and it wasn't until the mid-90's that they backed off that position and declared that immigration was not an issue they were going to support or oppose. A few years ago it came up again, and the ensuing fight split the Sierra Club pretty badly in some areas. Eventually the "Keep Sierra Neutral" groups won out, and their official position today is simply: "We have no formal position on the immigration issue".

The thing is, when environmentalist oppose immigration, it's because ALL serious environmentalists oppose population growth in general. There's just some disagreement in the environmental community about how to best achieve that. There's a big difference between that, and tea baggers who just don't like immigration because it brings more "brown people" into the country.

This guy was flat-out bug-fuck, bat-shit crazy.

http://www.businessinsider.com/discovery-channel-hostage-taker-demands-2010-9

"2. All programs on Discovery Health-TLC must stop encouraging the birth of any more parasitic human infants and the false heroics behind those actions. In those programs' places, programs encouraging human sterilization and infertility must be pushed. All former pro-birth programs must now push in the direction of stopping human birth, not encouraging it.

SNIP

5. Immigration: Programs must be developed to find solutions to stopping ALL immigration pollution and the anchor baby filth that follows that. Find solutions to stopping it. Call for people in the world to develop solutions to stop it completely and permanently. Find solutions FOR these countries so they stop sending their breeding populations to the US and the world to seek jobs and therefore breed more unwanted pollution babies. FIND SOLUTIONS FOR THEM TO STOP THEIR HUMAN GROWTH AND THE EXPORTATION OF THAT DISGUSTING FILTH! (The first world is feeding the population growth of the Third World and those human families are going to where the food is! They must stop procreating new humans looking for nonexistant jobs!)"

If you go to the web-site, he also wanted to get rid of all weapons... sort of ironic for someone who was also advocating de-population. What a loon. Too bad he was our loon.

9. But why
Its clear that he was caught on them for some reason. I just wonder why them, over say, a group insisting that all extras from a fertilization clinic deserve life. Or the Anti-Abortion movement. I mean, them with their bombs have surely had a greater impact on the birthrate than frivolous crap on Discovery.

I suspect its just a facet of the crazy that this man clearly was. But these are the questions I ask. Why are things as they are? Why can't our crazies on each end of the many spectrum's of issues they encounter take it up with each other, rather than going after others who are at best incidental to their particular focus?

I've heard tell of a fellow absolutely convinced, convinced, that the Beatles stole all their music from him.

To this guy, the Discovery Channel was key--key!--to the global conspiracy out to destroy the planet, just as Bush saw Saddam as key--key!--to the Muslin conspiracy to destroy Amurica. Some Saudi guys in Afghanistan do something crazy, say, and so we invade Iraq. Why? Why is the wrong question. When you are that crazy, you can convince yourself of anything.

16. Great
I love how this guy is labeled in the headline as an "environmental militant' when there appears to be a large number of other descriptors that could be applied. As if the concept of environmentalism hasn't already been demonized enough by our media.

And with regard to population control, some of us think it's a serious issue that we should be able to have an adult conversation about. That's been tough enough when so many people believe there's no conceivable limit to our exponential growth, and it's going to be even tougher now that this guy'll be the temporary face of the 'limited growth' side. *sigh*

23. While it's still up:
'1. The Discovery Channel and it's affiliate channels MUST have daily television programs at prime time slots based on Daniel Quinn's "My Ishmael" pages 207-212 where solutions to save the planet would be done in the same way as the Industrial Revolution was done, by people building on each other's inventive ideas. Focus must be given on how people can live WITHOUT giving birth to more filthy human children since those new additions continue pollution and are pollution. A game show format contest would be in order. Perhaps also forums of leading scientists who understand and agree with the Malthus-Darwin science and the problem of human overpopulation. Do both. Do all until something WORKS and the natural world starts improving and human civilization building STOPS and is reversed! MAKE IT INTERESTING SO PEOPLE WATCH AND APPLY SOLUTIONS!!!! '

I just read everything and I feel very sorry for him. In a way I can understand his pain and angst - that is NOT saying I agree with everything he wrote or his manner of getting his message across.

As a few others have already mentioned in their posts, population growth is a serious issue that we are facing. Perhaps his death will bring about some discussion.

The gunman who stormed the Discovery Channel building in Maryland on Wednesday and was shot to death following a four-hour hostage standoff with police wrote a San Diego federal judge seven years ago that he was a loner whose life was “a nightmare.”
