Rice ordered Bush: stay put
Joe Sinclair, London
September 7, 2010

CONDOLEEZZA Rice ordered George Bush not to return to Washington after the 9/11 attacks before hanging up the phone, the former national security adviser has revealed in a documentary interview.

In a heated exchange, Dr Rice had to argue with the US president, who was in Florida, telling him not to return to the White House because it was a potential terrorist target.

She told the British Channel 4 documentary: ''The president got on the phone and he said: 'I'm coming back.'

''I said: 'You cannot come back here. The United States of America is under attack, you have to go to safety. We don't know what is going on here.'

45. First, he stopped off in Louisiana, then high-tailed it to Nebraska
I believe the phrase "ran like a scared rabbit" was made for situations just like this. Those of us who remember that day remember first that all air traffic was immediately grounded. There was a specious story about how there might be another jet flying around (as I recall just after the fourth flight was crashed in Pennsylvania) that was maybe looking to ram Air Force One. That was the cover given for Bush stopping off in Louisiana before folks figured out how stupid that sounded, and then Bush proceeded to Nebraska to hide.

God, that was a horrible day, made moreso by the unending stream of bullshit being peddled by the people nominally in charge that day, and the credulity of the popular media.

Of course, it's Bush - so it doesn't matter.

Actions like that, however, can not come from the VP. He doesn't have the authority unless the President is indisposed and therefore, Cheney was acting president.

27. Apparently the 9/11 Commissin had another idea.

The 9/11 Commission states: "Prior to 9/11, it was understood that an order to shoot down a commercial aircraft would have to be issued by the National Command Authority (a phrase used to describe the president and secretary of defense)."

98. The Constitutiion says nothing about who can order a plane shot down.
If generals were ever told they could take orders from Cheney (and/or Condi and Cheney) they would take orders from them and act accordingly.

The Constitutiion says only that the President is CIC.

117. More than in just his own mind, unfortunately. G-dumbya was just a figurehead and an
alibi-in-the-box. He was controlled, managed, manipulated and maneuvered every single second of his pResidency. bush* was spoon-fed more times than Ronnie the Raygun and probably drooled just as much.

The old story about cheney* heading up the search committee for Vice President and nominating himself because of no other suitable candidate is horse pucky. If there was a search committee, it was to find an administration front man that was palatable enough to seemingly win Selection 2000.

I lived in Texas from 1981 through 1996. I watched the rehabilitation of G-dumbya from cocaine cowboy to owner:rofl: of the Rangers, to governor. bush* was akin to a clueless sperm donor. He just didn't realize it until the end. His one act even remotely Presidential was when he got off the leash and refused to pardon Scooter, which infuriated cheney*, who thought that one was already in the bag.

I wouldn't ask my president to ride into a hurricane, because hurricanes are really dangerous, but the aftermath of a piddling terrorist strike? Please.

It seems that many of us really need to think hard and reorder our priorities. We are witlessly afraid of the wrong danger. NO TERRORIST EVER DESTROYED A CITY. Katrina did.

There hadn't been an attack on the mainland of the US since the War of 1812, no one possibly could know the scope of it the day it was being launched. And for three thousand people and their families, it wasn't 'piddling'. You make a grave insult against the people who lost their lives that day.

83. Yes, and the Japanese also launched balloons
that would ride the jet stream and try to make the Northwest forests burn. They actually killed some Americans with one of them.

But the sub attacks were nothing compared to what was KNOWN about the 9/11 attacks as of the point in time that Rice would have had this conversation with Bush.

In any case, what happened that day was not piddling.

12. High Lies (Ode to Condoleezza Rice)
Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of truth,
And cast my lies from crimson-lipsticked lips;
Onward I've lied, and weaved a rambling myth
Of grateful crowds ...and claimed a hundred things
You have not swallowed...weaved, demurred and spun
Fading into sullen silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting media along, and flung
My eager crap through endless streams of wind.
Up, up, the false, delirious flaming lies
I've topped the biggest ones with easy grace
When neither Rove, nor even Cheney could.
And while with soiled, uplifted heels I've trod
The pure untrespassed sanctity of truth...
...put out my thumb, and poked the eye of God.

(With apologies to John Gillespie Magee)

15. She always was a liar. I remember her on Meet the Press
even when she knew we knew they were lying she couldn't help herself.

I remember how she DIDN'T remember what was written on that little warning to Bush about Bin Laden striking on U.S. territory and how they tried to hide it since it proved her to be a liar.

And who can forget her lies about 'never thinking that planes would be flown into Buildings'. National Sec. Adviser didn't know about the Bojinka plot which was exactly what they intended to do.

And then there was the HUGE scary lie about Mushrooms clouds coming our way from Iraq.

Why are all these liars writing books right now? Why don't they just go away and hide so we are not reminded once again of what they did to this country?

No amount of money seems to be enough for them. I hope she has nightmares about all the dead Iraqi children her lies helped to kill.

28. I'm curious....
Did you mean that seriously? I ask because if there was a false flag/LIHOP type thing, I have always thought maybe, if that in fact happened, that Bush really had no clue, that it was orchestrated by Cheney and the neocons. That was strengthened when I was in Austin at a political event and Molly Ivins was asked about the conspiracy theories and she became almost livid. She said that while she disagrees with Bush on 85% of what he does politically, she knows George and Laura Bush personally and that any kind of involvement in something like that is just crazy. She then, in classic Molly style, said, "There's some people I wouldn't put it past, but not George W. Bush. I'm sorry, we disagree on almost everything - famously - but I also know he's not got a bone in him capable of going along with anything like that." Some were surprised. Others there in Austin, told me that while she hates his politics, she truly likes him and Laura and their kids.

Don't kill the messenger. I'm just telling you what I had thought and then how that seemed to sway me that way even more. So, I am curious what exactly you meant? Something like what I just wrote?

the only evidence either way is melted down in China or in the Fresh Kills landfill, and I doubt it will ever be settled conclusively. Whether George was a simple meat puppet or was induced to take an active role is up for debate, as there's evidence each way. Again, no need to Dungeonate this thread.

Of course I think they kept the shrub out of the loop because he has flapping lips and no real brain power...

As for cheney and rummy -- damn straight they did it!

I believe that they either planned and carried out the whole deal or, more probable, found out about the plan and enabled it by letting the Saudis into the country, keeping jet fighters grounded and/or out of the way and by finally setting off the demolition charges they planted in the THREE towers that were dropped on 9/11 and fired the missile that hit the Pentagon after some trigger happy jet jockeys shot down flight 93 (they weren't supposed to).

False Flag all the way!

But the shrub was kept out of the loop for oh, so many reasons... Hell, Condi was probably kept out of the loop to 'cause she's a gurl...

52. New Documentary: Condi Rice Yelled at Bush on 9/11
Edited on Tue Sep-07-10 02:04 PM by Renew Deal
Source: AOL

(Sept. 7) -- Condoleezza Rice shouted on the phone at President George W. Bush during the initial chaos after the 9/11 attacks and ordered him to stay away from the nation's capital. Then she hung up on him.

In a History Channel documentary that will be shown Thursday, two days before the ninth anniversary of the terrorist attacks, Rice says she got a phone call from the president after the second jetliner rammed the World Trade Center in New York. He was visiting a school in Florida and said he was coming back to Washington, where the Pentagon was struck by a third plane and rumors spread of a car bombing near the State Department.

No way, Rice told him.

''I said, 'You cannot come back here. The United States of America is under attack, you have to go to safety. We don't know what is going on here.'"

When the commander in chief persisted, Rice says she put down the phone.
"I said to him in a raised voice, and I had never raised my voice to the president before, I said, 'You cannot come back here.' I hung up,"
Britain's Independent reported today.

"The president was quite annoyed with me, to say the least," she said.

The documentary, "9-11: State of Emergency," also contains interviews with military leaders including former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, rescue workers, military members and survivors of the Pentagon and World Trade Center attacks.

Rice describes a chaotic White House struggling to function in an underground bunker as communication systems failed and the president was forced to communicate with staff over an unsecured line.

The bunker where she hid with Vice President Dick Cheney and other staff began to run out of air.

''There were so many people in the bunker that the oxygen levels started dropping, and the secret service came in and said we've got to get some people out of here, she said, according to London's Daily Mail. "'They literally went around telling people that they weren't essential and they had to leave."

77. It's been crap for years
I'm all for history from a people's perspective, but tossing out the tagline "history happens every day" doesn't mean there's any lasting historical value in shows about pawn shops and ice road truckers, let alone all the pseudoscience and religion irrationality-fests they're wont to air. At least when it was Hitler all the time there was some pretense of trying to get things right.

with his red cape and blue tights outfit on, single-handedly saving everyone in the burning WTC buildings, and holding them up all by himself, preventing their collapse, which saved untold others down on the ground. That was the day Bush saved America.

111. As much as I don't want to excuse Mr. Bush's reaction...
I have to believe that this is probably true... it was a very confusing time... nobody understood the scope of the attack, nobody knew what was next..

They executed the plans that were drawn up years before... the plans that called for the President to to fly to a secure location with communications...

Similar plans I hope Mr. Obama will follow if necessary...

Fortunately the attack was of limited scope...

But with the unfortunate result that the US was left wondering "Where is the President?". In that particular circumstance, viewed with hindsight, it would have been better for Mr. Bush to fly back to DC immediately..., but hindsight is a wonderful thing... I only wish I could apply it to many circumstances in my own life!

Leon Panetta's testimony to the 9/11 commission says it all.

(Not word for word)
Panetta was in Cheney's bunker on 9/11/01, when an Air Force
Major enters the room and announced 30 miles and closing.
A bit later, 20 miles and closing.
Then again "ten miles out...". This time the Air Force Major
asked Cheney "do the orders still stand, sir?",
to which Cheney responds "Of course they still stand.
Has anyone told you anything different?"
The Air Force Major leaves and never returns. 10 minutes later
reports that the pentagon had been hit reaches the bunker.

116. Yep. That one has *almost* disappeared down the memory hole.
One wonders what ever happened to that Air Force Major... permanent posting to the Arctic Circle? Front line duty in Iraqastan?

The next year or so should be quite interesting. If some of the underground rumors are true and that cheney* is quite ill, I wonder if cheney*'s death will spark people like that Air Force Major to finally come forward and tell what they know.

I also look with glee to Poodle Blair's abortive attempts at rehabilitation.

And isn't it amazing the Colin Powell is trying to polish up the ol' historical perspective.

Next year is the 10th anniversary of the new Pearl Harbor-type event. I wonder what the future holds?
